DIY meals for $4-6 that don’t require being dehydrated ?

In addition to the foil bags of Tuna, you can also get the foil packs of canned Chicken. That with Tortillas and a Bag of salad makes Chicken Tacos!! you didnt mention what your weight constraints are but having Chicken Tacos as opposed to Mountain House is WONDERFUL!! Sald in general is very refreshing in the backcountry, Lightweight but somewhat bulky
Have you experimented with how long lettuce keeps in backpack vs cooler ? Id venture to guess 2 maybe 3 days, with greater issue being destroyed from crushing is in backpack vs heat.

Id imagine romaine heart would last longer than in a bag too, but don’t know from experience.

When we packed in, i made a stash in the creek to keep cool,. IF you arent camped near water, you dont have that option. We usually packed in with horses so didnt have the same weight and space concerns but i have done it backpacking also Yes there is a shelf life but it was awesome to have fresh greens. ..,

Use a freezer ziplock bag as they can handle hot water better. Dump in some instant mashed potatoes (I like garlic and herb flavor) and a packet of gravy mix. Add hot water and a foil packet of canned chicken. One of my favorite meals, very filling and cheap. Experiment at home to figure out the ratio of potatoes to gravy mix, and how much water you need, then make up however many ziplocs you want. Super convenient.
