I know there has been a lot of interest in starting to make knives and thought i would throw this out there. This is a simple to make vice out of wood that anyone can make with basic tools. I uses some t nuts to make the threaded inserts and basic clamping knobs. The inserts are just oak boards and used a 9” nail guard plate from plumbing aisle at Home Depot so threaded knobs can push on it evenly. The light colored one is just oak 1x material and I used 5/16” thread for top clamping knobs and 3/8” for back one to spin it. This one has made 40 knives or so probably without issue. The dark colored one I made out of Some scrap Ipe decking I had laying around and used 3/8” threads for this one and made the opening 2” tall and 2.5” wide. The oak one is 2” tall and 3” wide. They are both 9” long. You could probably make them shorter but I went with this length in case I wanted to make some big bowies down the road. I almost always on use the front 2 clamping knobs also since most of the stuff I have made only has 3”-5” long blades.
If anyone has questions fire away. There are lots of fancy welded metal ones out there but if you want to be frugal about it this is an excellent way to go. Hope this helps someone get started making some blades.
