I'm headed out on a DIY archery Elk hunt last week of September southern CO. Any tips, tricks, knowledge transfer would be highly appreciated.
Excellent advice. Oh and welcome to the forum.Grab a map, find a trail (or not), bring your boots, pack your glass, look for elk. Drink water, eat food, stay dry. Enjoy the ride. Good luck.
That is our plan! Thanks for the reply.Grab a map, find a trail (or not), bring your boots, pack your glass, look for elk. Drink water, eat food, stay dry. Enjoy the ride. Good luck.
Thank you for the tip. We will be up there 7 days so hopefully we find them.Hunt where elk are, not where they were. Alot of pressure in SoCo. Elk will be on the move alot. Finding the pockets pays off.....
Never hunted CO before. I'm hearing it's going to be rough country.Hi Aaron Falls. Have you been to the area of southern CO before or have you hunted there?
Thank you for the reply and tips on finding more Elk Hunting info. Yes our plan is to do lots of learning and eventually turn our new learned knowledge to a successful bag of meat. Since i've already spent thousands of dollars on gear hopefully I get to go many many years. This forum is a wealth of knowledge and you are asking one of the most asked questions. . . But I give you credit, you did not ask for a specific unit!
Tips and tricks
1. Search the elknut, watch and listen to everything you can find on him. Download the elknut app and use it! (This will provide a wealth of knowledge on calling and hunting situations.)
2. Go spend $100 at elk101.com, it might be the best $100 you spend.
3. Utilize the search bar in this forum!!! You can find a ton of info, most likely even on your specific area, just by looking through old forums.
4. Prepare yourself to see more people than elk! That way if it's the other way around you are happy, but if it happens you are prepared.
I'm packing my spike camp gear just in case.Don't go home early.
Thanks. Yes this is definitely our attitude and we are going after them. I imagine the only thing in our way will be a lack of oxygen and other hunters. If you are a turkey hunter, plan to hunt elk like turkeys with a freakin awesome nose. If they are sounding off helps, if not, try to put eyes on them, figure out where they are going and get after em.
Or you can hunt em like deer, find a water hole or wallow and hunt from the ground or a tree stand.
I am only one for three on elk so not an expert any any stretch. But as a still newbie to elk but experienced hunter I can tell just take your hunting experience to those woods and start figuring it out. I had shot opps on the first two trips that I passed for various reasons. They may be mythical creatures but they are not invincible. When you start feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath and remember its a hunt, it's a process and stick freakin to it.
Cant never did a damn thing.
