Diy aoudad

Been looking into doing a aoudad hunt in texas and have been trying to find more information for them but nothing is coming up regarding DIY aoudad in texas.

Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding it or who has hunted there if they can explain how it goes.

That is all i have been finding is people just saying to pay tresspass fee for private land.

I know of an outfitter that allows self guided hunts on ranch out in the davis mountains of texas, but for far cheaper you could apply for a public hunt in texas.

I put in for every TX aoudad draw hunt each year...one day! Cheapest trespass DIY hunt I have seen has been around $1200

Tresspass fee will do for me still cheaper hunt then paying for guides i am not a guide paying person. A guided hunt is $4000 usd for that amount it covers my flight from australia to texas , hunting for a week food etc and trophy exportation.

The good is they are exotics so they can be hunted all year long with no bag limits. No tag required. Also, as exotics, you can get the special non resident hunting license or the 5-day special which will cost far less than the non-resident annual license

The bad is land is tough to come by and public hunting is non existent other than the draws which are like when the lottery. A lot of people hunt deer under feeders here and the aoudad are just a nuisance to some so if you may be able to find a place to hunt for a small fee if you can make the right connections.

The hunt you are looking for is NM. I live in texas and don't even bother. I'm not paying a ridiculous trespass fee or for a guide. The draw hunts for sheep are very very low odds. Texas recently went to an online draw system which made it much easier to apply. Which is great except 10x the amount of people apply now.

I have done the NM OTC counter hunt several times. I have taken 1 ram and 1 ewe. It is very doable but sheep are pressured and can be hard to find. I will be out there again in April as I already filled this year tag. If you are looking for a trophy ram the OTC in NM may not be the place though

I would say it just depends on what experience you are looking for.

New Mexico is a tough hunt. Woodbow and I were incredibly excited just to be able to find 3 ewes on our trip. He has since sent a couple friends out to the area we hunted and they came back without seeing a single animal. The habitat doesn't seem to support a ton of them and there were quite a few people out and about when we were there. Like mentioned before, it could be very hard to find a big ram. That said, its very doable on a budget. To me, its a hell of a lot better than waiting 5-10 years to draw a hunt in Texas and dealing with all the ridiculous extra rules that they give you on those hunts (not allowed to hunt by yourself, not allowed to backpack/camp in the hunting areas, have to hunt during a specific week only) even though there is probably higher success on the Texas hunts. The other option is a trespass fee which I think would be a super cool option if you can afford it and find the right place. There are some ranches in west Texas that are absolutely massive where you could essentially get a backcountry experience. I've heard Steven Rinella explain how he was blown away at the amount of wild land available in Texas when he came down here. The downside is that all that land is privately owned so you have to pay to use it.

Money is not an issue i am just having a hard time to find a ranch to hunt on and pay a tresspassing fee to do so

wow!! you live in EP! i grew up there, and an Aoudad is the first big game animal i took to land me on this insane hobby rollercoaster.

i took it on a private ranch in the Davis Mtn, where my ex-8th grade principle took me along. what a hunt. we found hundreds of them.

i need to get back after them one day, but there are so many other animals to try for.

Yes I call El Paso home, deployed at the moment will be back in the spring. Just in time to go for the OTC season in NM
