I love my 3.6oz Apex synthetic quilt. It is used as static insulation when I'm sitting around, and also layered over my 40 degree down quilt for extra warmth and moisture management. But dang it's bulky and heavy. And the other downside is that Apex will eventually lose loft as its compressed.
I recently got a pair of base layer bottoms in 90gsm Alpha Direct. This material is very impressive, crazy light and warm. There currently isn't a commercial option for what I wanted, and even if there was I couldn't afford it. So, I set out to make it myself. I got 2 yards of 90gsm Alpha Direct, and 2 yards of Argon 90. I trimmed the Alpha a tiny bit then got a local seamstress to fold the Argon over and sew all the way around the perimeter. Added a few paracord loops and a drawstring for the footbox. It came out excellent and was extremely easy to do.
I broke my new quilt in on a backpacking trip last week. With it layered over my 40 degree down quilt, I was warm enough (not toasty) in the low 30's at night. I also used it to replace a down puffy for sitting around the fire at night. Couldn't be happier with the way it turned out!
