The Deer Creek Fire in Utah near La Sal about (50 miles SE of Moab) started 3 days ago and has exploded into over 7,000 acres and has crossed into Colorado. I have a tag for 4th season cow elk less than 20 miles away. It is zero percent controlled as of this morning. Hope the firefighters can slow it down and stop it before it gets to the area I am going to hunt!

We got a couple burning up on the Kaibab. One near Jacob Lake at 40,000+ acres, 0% contained. Another near the North Rim Visitors Center in GNP at 5,000+, 0% contained.

Hot and dry. Rain in the forecast later this week…..hope it shows up!

The main problem is getting access to the area I usually hunt. If the fire burns the area where the access road is and we get a lot of August/September monsoon rain, it could be impossible to use the road. When the fire is out and the Forest Service opens the access, I'll spend a few days looking what the fire did. My hunting area is only an hour and a half from my home place.

Western CO. burst into flames this week as well, 3 major fires at this time. Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Dominguez canyon Sowbelly fire, and Gateway area. Last night at dusk the winds really picked up around here with no visibility, so I can only think that it didn't help at all with all those fires. Plus seen a lot of dry lightning again. 100's all week very dry.

From atop the Grand Mesa Saturday, Gateway about 40 miles away, Dominguez to the left La Sal's behind the smoke..

Great site to visualize smoke plums and current fires.

Over 10,000 now. I read that the County Fire Department in Utah said it was human started not lightning.

This morning it is almost 15,000 acres and less than 10% contained. Crossed into Colorado, about 3 miles west of Paradox. This is going to be a big one!
