Decided against a HS precision SPL in a 300 rum. Opted for a HS precision PHR in a 300 win without the mercury recoil reducer. It game down to barrel longevity, recoil, and cost. Just couldn't justify the cost of reloading for the minimal performance increase. Also, even though I can handle the recoil now, what about 20 years from now?

Decided a 300 win was just a more logical well rounded option over my lifetime. I did order it with a 26" barrel to try and squeeze out some more velocity. Hoping to shoot a 190 or 200 accubond out of it and really hoping to get close to that 3k fps mark.

I use a RUM as a dedicated LR rifle, 200 gr Accubonds at 3200 fps in the 30" barrel. For my all-around western hunting rifle, I also went with the 300 win mag. Pierce Ti action and lighter contour bbl, probably cut to 25" and manners light weight hunter stock(or mcmillan edge). Have all but the stock on hand and will put it together this winter and have it ready for next fall. You'll definitely hit 3K with the 180's, might be pushing it with a 200, but you'll be close enough that any elk won't know the difference.

I have a 300 WM. I had a 300 RUM but had it rebarreled to 338 RUM when the barrel started to go.

I went 300 WM but have been a bit disappointed with my loads so far. I haven't been able to develop an accurate load with 180 accubonds that groups well past 2900 fps but was able to get 2950 out of a load with 208 amax's. That load shot an average of .8" groups at 100 yards (not as good as my accurate 180 gr loads) but had an extreme spread of just 8 fps. I just don't know how I feel about hunting with amax's

I should note that I am shooting out of a 22" barrel and that my 180 accubond loads were far from max loads, I just couldn't get them to group well at a faster velocity.

I second Justin's recommendation of the 215g Bergers. My 300RUM loves them and they do a number on elk. You should be able to develop a good load with the 300WM using a slow powder. Just have to look really hard to find the 215s as they are really popular.
