Decent Colorado Mule Deer unit within 3 hrs of Denver?

I'm going to switch gears this fall and spend some time chasing muleys instead of elk. I plan to grab a tag on the leftover list as I made my decision too late to put in for the regular draw. My son is in Arvada and will likely join me for a few days, so I'd like to keep it within a few hours drive of him if possible. Just looking to narrow down the list of units if possible. Thanks!

I haven't found a unit yet that doesn't have decent mule deer, except the ones that contain the pawnee grasslands. Just find one on the LO list with decent access, which will more than likely put you west of I25.

Most of the state is within a 3 hour drive of Denver lol. Pick a unit that fits your hunting criteria and stick with one unit over time. The Colorado game and fish website can be your best friend.....

Not where I have been hunting the past 4 years. Both places are at least 5-6 hrs. real time. The place my son and I were covered up with muleys 3 years ago took him 7 hrs. over 2 passes to get to.

Would you rather hunt somewhere within a few hours that you don't know anything about, or 7 hours away in a place that they cover you up?

I don't think you understand this isn't about what I want.

2 hours drive means my son can be in camp with me after he gets off work, and we can head out to hunt first thing in the morning. 7 hrs drive means he blows half a day coming and half a day going, and spends one night in camp.

So yea, looking to hunt closer to Denver but I appreciate what you're saying.

The good news is that hunting camps are allowed in unit 38 as well. There are actually so many deer that one can get List B buck tags and List C doe tags. You can even hunt December to January. That sounds like a lot of "decent" options. https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/RulesRegs/Brochure/BigGame/biggame.pdf Page 25, and the rest of the book, would have a lot of helpful information. One could even add on from a handful of similar options a "decent" elk tag that they could learn about by scrolling to page 42.

Make a 2 hr circle on the gmu map and look at the deer stats and correlate.

Have you looked at the CPW harvest stats, draw stats, and overall deer herd stats in all of the units within that drive? Like said before, all the info you could possibly want on the statistics is out there.
