Where does a 20' 6PRC put you at 1800 fps, and what's the estimated barrel life?

Probably 10 miles with a 20 foot barrel

88: 2725

That’s impressive… with the 88’s at 2725, it keeps above 1800 fps out to nearly 800 yards at 7800’ elevation 30 degrees. Here I was thinking I wanted to put together a 6cm/243 to shoot 95’s….

Take it with a healthy grain of salt. 88’s have proved very temperamental for most people trying to reload them. It will likely hit that velocity, but no guaranty that the groups will be tight enough to use. The 80’s and 75’s eldm have been very consistent and easy to load for in the barrel I got from LS with the 223 wylde throat.

Thanks for the heads up. Running the numbers on 80 at 2800, that puts it past 700 with 1800 fps. The wind bracket isn’t as good and it doesn’t lineup with quick drop too well. Still very tempting though…

Yeah. Alex wheeler (AW2) chamber is the most common one that is a couple thousandths wider at the web than saami min. There’s always various throat lengths but in general hornady throat specs align with what most guys were spec’ing for custom reamers on older cartridges they wanted to shoot heavies in anyway.

For the guys doing 223 ai, I'm curious why not just go 22 ARC? I know theres +/- $100 in bolt work, but then you get better everything else save barrel life.

I asked a few questions on here about going it and wanted to because I liked Barnes LRX’s but I’d check on from someone more knowledgeable than me because I think you’re gonna run into COAL issues in a Tikka action. If it feeds in the action then you’ll 100% need a longer mag if it’ll fit.

Depends on bullet, muzzle velocity, and density altitude. But roughly way the fook yards past where people should be shooting at animals.

You’re running your numbers off an 18” barrels estimated velocity. The benefit of the 223 ai is you can go shorter while preserving velocity.

I bet if you run your QD calcs for a 16” barrel you’d be spot on.

Great point… 2700 with the 80’s make QD nearly percent. Problem is the guys on here don’t want a 16”. An 18” AI with airlock nano would be the same OAL as my 16” 223 with raptor 8 so I was ok with taking the 16” for the 18” but maybe we can talk guys into a 16” 223AI with 7 twist

Side note, have you heard 80’s requiring different bullet profile (BC/velcoity) at different ranges like 300-800 vs 800+? I can’t remover the numbers/garages but believe [mention]B_Reynolds_AK [/mention] made mention of it?

I expect it to be a 900-1000 yard gun at elevation in early season temperatures. But, it is the benefit of wind calls inside 600 that makes the difference for me.

I will shoot the 108 and 109 ELDm most often. Velocity often trumps BC inside 600 if you can get it. That’s why I like the 80s over the 88s in my 22 Creed as well. With shorter barrels, just go with lighter bullets, IMO. Numbers don’t lie. You can see the dope to 600 is pretty much the same. It doesn’t change a whole lot more out to 800z

For barrel break in, I was running a mild charge with Hornady 106 gr bullets in my 19” barrel. That put it at 3000 fps and 1800 fps at 850 yards.

And, a mild load with 95 gr TMK at 3150 fps put me at 800 to 1800 fps.

Here is the last 4 shot group with the 95 TMK. I didn’t think more would help me… sometimes small groups repeating is enough data. The stray is a 7mm.

And, AB dope for my local range at 1200 ft elevation.

It should fit and run in the UM bottom metal and magazines. Barnes load data has a col of 3.475" and the internal of the UM mag is 3.54".

I have a 257 Roberts Improved on an old Remington 722 action that is a reamed original 257 Roberts rifle. I'd love to have one in a fast twist barrel instead of a 10 twist but I already got the 25 Creedmoor buy started and it is less fuss to shoot heavy bullets due to factory ammo with heavies available to buy.
