I've been looking at picking up some Darn Tough socks and was wondering what folks thought of them. I've been wearing Smartwools and silk liners for years and this works fine for me, but I have a buddy that suggested Darn Tough's and he states that there's no need for liners with them. Has anyone else here had the same experience using DT's?

Used them for 3 years now and will never own anything else.

My first set is still going strong and there's no need for liners.

Darn Toughs are the best socks I have ever used,, very hard to wear them out. I did try to wear liners with them this fall, more because I had them on in my sleeping bag and was too lazy to take them off. With the liners on my DTs kept walking down into my boots. I took the liners off and was good to go. I wore combat boots for 21 years so I have had just a bit of experience with boot socks, wish they made DTs back in the day, would have saved me a lot of money.

I too wear smart wool and Lorpen socks with liners and love the one pair of DTs that I own. I have the over the calf extra cushion models and they are so comfortable I don't feel like putting shoes on over them haha. I haven't worn a liner with them nor do I feel like I would need them. Great sock.

been wearing them for two years now daily. shorties for tennis shoes and short mucks and some over the ankle for the wings and 8"boots. believe it will be hard to wear them out as have not even had a run or small hole in them, the original pairs. a great variety is good and bad as makes hard to choose. bought most of mine from backcountry. the darn toughs and short mucks are worn lots all year and no problems with sweating in the heat , but just using them around the yard not extreme hiking.......

I have the super duty extra cushion over the calf model and there is no need for liners. I have been wearing them since August and so far I couldn't be happier. Going to get some lighter ones for general use around town next. I was skeptical about them but I'm now a believer. No matted down spots or thinning after repeated use and I'm pretty heavy at about 260lbs.

I still love my Smartwool socks, but DT's rock! Probably all I will buy going forward. Oh, and I don't wear a liner sock with either.

I have only owned one pair and have been using them the last 3 years. I call them my "sheep killing socks" as I've seen 6 sheep now fall over while wearing them. :D

I use other standard merino socks for my summer hiking in Salomons as they get trashed and wet more often then not. But when I leave teh creeks and swamps behind and swap out of the Salomons and into the mountain boots the darn toughs go on. ;)

Like everyone else has said regarding the DT socks they are the best I have tried. I only own one pair and they are the pair I always gravitate to. I will be getting more. Bob.

They're pretty comfy, although i've only got a pair of the running socks that I wear under my soccer socks. I've been giving them a beating and they've held up well.

This was my experience as well, but I never tried them without a liner sock. Might have to try that....couldn't stand the socks bunching up in my boot. I use Smartwool Classics and they have been perfect for me so far.....with a liner. Can go all day in the steeps and never have to adjust them.

These are the ones I use as well. I use a liner sock with them, but I don't know that I'd need too or not as I haven't tried without.

My short socks from DT have had a ton more use over the last two spring/summer/falls on my weekly hikes, so those are the ones that I have put through the ringer. They have one hole in them, but I don't attribute that to quality. I had left a toenail a little jagged in the corner on my big toe and it kind of cut through the sock. But the hole is not getting larger. I bought them last year thinking I would alternate between them and my smartwools...and I will alternate once I get another pair of DT socks. My foot slips around more in my hiking shoes with the smart wool. I'm not saying the smartwool is giving me blisters type slip, but if say I'm kind of quickly moving down a technical part in a trail, my foot might move just a little in the SW which causes me to think about my footing for a second and not where my next step will be. Not a biggie if I'm walking. The smart wools also pill just a little bit. The DT don't at all.
