Daniel Boone Bear Management Area

Hello - I'm new to Rokslide; I recently moved to western NC from GA (though I've worked/played up here for many years), and I drew 2 of the November Daniel Boone Bear Management Area hunt dates. I've not hunted bear before (mostly a deer hunter), but I'm really interested. Does anyone in this forum have experience with that hunt area who'd be willing to chat with me? I don't have dogs, but I'd be interested in connecting with hound hunters as well as folks who still hunt, as I likely will be doing. I have a saddle and a climber that I could use (what I usually hunt deer with during archery season), but I imagine this more as a hunt from the ground scenario. Totally open to advice/comments/suggestions. Thanks, y'all!

I have never hunted that way, but I was successful my first year harvesting a bear on public land in Arkansas and I'd be happy to share what I learned if you want to PM me, pretty similar terrain I would imagine!

Thank you - I would appreciate that. I'm not sure how to PM; when I clicked on your username, I got the options "follow" and "ignore." Would you please point me in the right direction or start the PM thread?

I just got an email today that the Pisgah is closed except for Nantahala, which just opened back up.https://click-1056513.icptrack.com/...2483c092ca167285ba0ce0a8622ee361199399092428a
I drew that D Boone bear hunt a couple of years ago, and was really disappointed. So many campers, glampers, hikers, bikers, etc. It’s about an hour and half from my house, so I’ll admit I didn’t spend enough time scouting, but I saw more bear sign in the general NF areas that I normally hunt than I did there. Also it was the 2022 during the Covid craziness so there were probably more people than normal, but I have not been back since. Good luck if you go and let us know how you did.

Look for the acorns and only hunt fresh sign. If you do any pre scouting try to find isolated springs or water up high and if there is fresh sign and food nearby those are goldmines.

How’d your hunt go there? I drew the late December hunt and planning to hunt there for bear and deer. I’ll be driving up from SC. Any insight on how the hunt went or do you have any tips? I’ve never scouted the area but I’ve put some time in looking at maps and I have a basic plan together for now. I hunt the SC still season and have done well in the past so I’m probably going to setup somewhere I can see a long way and hope something comes by.

I did go, but I never could find any fresh sign or even many acorns. Did see a number of fresh scrapes, though. The NF was closed, but the game warden I talked to said they weren't going to be kicking hunters out. I was a little nervous about getting in trouble with the forest service, but I saw 3 trucks of them, and no one said anything to me.

Good to know. It looks like they’ve opened up the NF since the hurricane. I know the acorn situation has been bad in SC too. I think it was unusually dry and then the hurricane knocked off most of them that were there so there’s not much food on the ground now. I’m sure they will be roaming a lot that time of the year especially.
