Man, its only been a couple of months since deer season and I am already dying to go----its gonna be a long winter, spring and summer. Been seeing a lot of deer on the winter ground and this bad boy showed up in the backyard last night.

Yep. I feel your pain. Already getting my calendar filled up with possible dates/states for next years hunts. Started running yesterday and weighted hike today.

Know exactly where you're coming feom Randy. Been pouring over the maps, regs, forums and blogs putting together '17. Haven't waterfowled a lick. Steelheading has changed. No saltwater fly trips on the horizon. Tough time of year. Using my time wisely planning, researching and getting ready physically.

If only time and money were no object...

Got to make the best of it. :)

You need to find some late season tags. I'm still chasing some whitetails until Dec 31 and chasing cows until the end of Jan.

Yikes, a late Jan cow will likely have a very developed calf in it.
I saw this last year with a neighbor's cow elk and that was a late December kill!
I had a Nov--Dec 31st cow tag this Fall and made sure of an early November kill to avoid the 'two for one'...

Since these late hunts are "management hunts" it doesn't really matter. If anything, it's like taking two out of the herd. An early Nov cow kill will still have a calf if she's been bred.

yip 5miles and a September cow hunt would likely have many bred cows. Talking to our biologists at the Fish and Game here, they always consider that when planning for these hunts. Cow hunts are almost always population control hunts. They want the two-for-one or they would schedule these in August.

Just realized we derailed the thread!

Sorry Randy, and thanks for posting that buck. Long cold winter ahead for sure. Thanks

Nice buck Randy. Its going to be a long winter spring and summer down this way too. My momma drew the Utah Sportsmans Rocky Mnt Goat tag for 2017. I'm looking forward to watching some goats on Beaver Mnt this summer. She is pretty excited. She never has drawn a good tag and for her first good tag, she pulls the sportsmans tag for goats. Its going to be a fun year in 2017!

You guys are 100% right, a Sept cow is bred, but that calf is a virtual amoeba at that point; by January they are really developed.
Not a big deal for some guys, but others don't like it--'management hunt' notwithstanding. My neighbor is a hard core hunter, but he swore off late season cow tags after seeing the calf drop out with everything else. I hunted/killed early too just to avoid dealing with a developed calf.

Its not illegal, unethical or anything else. Simply a heads up should some not want to deal with it.

Sorry for the 'jack, threads like these are great in that they have a 'kick back and gab' feel about them.
Great mule deer, Mntr...hope he stays 'home' for a year, but damn that's a long time! I'd be awake nights thinking about that guy....

Hot topic:
Does life begin at conception? Is a bred September cow just carrying a "Ball of cells"? At what point is it a life?

I think I've seen Andrew Zimmerman eat a fetus of some critter. Probably real tender.

I envy guys who live in areas they get to see wintering deer. Or places where you can go shed hunting to pass the offseason. You guys that can do that are blessed!

I have enough points for a decent premium CA zone next year, so I'm pouring over maps and through old pictures. I can spend days doing this and it's always exciting. I can get a tag for me, or split my points and get a tag for me and a friend. Decisions, decisions.... :)

Lots of bucks starting to come down and I'm itchin to go and get some pics but been busier than crap with plowing snow----47 hours overtime just last week.
Hopefully I can get some free time between storms and take some photos. October can't come soon enough:(

Randy

Nice looking buck! I saw a few nice ones this past weekend while looking for coyotes.... watched a couple of fights through the glass too which was cool.

Overtime plowing snow?? How long could it possibly take to plow THE road in Sweet?? ;)

I don't gut much of anything, I skin and take the meat.

As for the topic.....I don't get too excited about deer. I turned in a late season 13 point tag this year for a couple reasons, but I don't even feel like I missed anything. Elk on the other hand........
