Talk about a bunch of true to the bone heroes. Life expectancy for those guys leaving the amphibious vehicles that served as the D-Day landing craft under orders to take the beach was measured in minutes. Look around at the people in your workplace and that you see on the street every day commuting to and from work and try to conceptualize them being in that scenario. Something to ponder as we "progress" as a society.
 
D Day has more meaning to me after seeing the Documentary on my Son in Laws Grandfather that was a WWII photographer. I'll link it here but warning, it's not for the queasy....some pretty dramatic and brutal footage that wasn't released to the public during the war- the thought was they couldn't stomach it.
