My great uncle made it off the beach that day.
He later died holding the Ardennes. Truly was an honor to be able to visit his grave.

Fox Co 506th, 101st Airborne, Stick 81

Pfc. Don Emelander, Pvt. Harvey Morehead, 1Lt. Carll Macdowell, Sgt. Bill Green.

Emelander was seriously WIA 06 Jun 44.
MacDowell would be KIA in Bastogne 03 Jan 45.
Bill Green was the last Fox Co KIA, 04 Feb 45.

Talk about a bunch of true to the bone heroes. Life expectancy for those guys leaving the amphibious vehicles that served as the D-Day landing craft under orders to take the beach was measured in minutes. Look around at the people in your workplace and that you see on the street every day commuting to and from work and try to conceptualize them being in that scenario. Something to ponder as we "progress" as a society.
