So I bought an LR-X a few months ago and finally got around to shooting it. I also have an MR-X, and two 10 year old TCs, a Triumph and an Impact. Those are all 50 caliber.
Today I shot the LRX and both TCs. The LRX is a very different gun. Much heavier obviously and made for longer range shooting. My initial impression of the CVA is that it’s a little rough around the edges compared to the TCs, even the $200 Impact. TCs fit and finish is better and they’re just easier to operate. Some of this stems from the CVA design. First off, the collapsible ram rod is DUMB. I hate it. I screwed the little adapter that came with the 280 Grain ELRs that are supposed to fit the bullet cone. First push, which went in nice and smooth, and the adapter was stuck to the bullet. Since the rod isn’t made to pull, it naturally kept coming apart with the end stuck to the bullet. I finally worked it out after a minute or two of cussing. Second load, same thing. This time the bullet came off its tail and was attached to the rod. This was the only two times this happened. The next 12 rounds all loaded just fine. I’ll have get a better adapter.
I got the gun sighted in after just a few shots. I started with 77 grains by weight of Blackhorn, the max load I’m told. With the 280 grain ELRs the recoil was stiff but not unbearable. The heavy gun helps this for sure.
Second gripe. After a shot, the break action is quite tight. Once the primer is popped, it expands and makes the action unpleasant to open. Now that I know this. It’s not insurmountable to open it, but it’s annoying. Additionally, the primers, once fired, are terrible to remove. They expand in the breech and I spent time picking and pulling to get them out. A fast follow up shot would require a primer tool or some pliers or something. With both TCs, the primers fall right out on the ground on their own. Maybe I need to try another primer? I’m not sure.
Lastly, the flex in the forend is substantial. While it doesn’t seem to impact the function, it’s pretty dang sloppy. I’m sure it’s a symptom of the free floated barrel and the two piece stock. But it’s also really stupid.
With all the said, the trigger is pretty good and the gun SHOOTS lasers. I can probably overlook the guns shortcomings given the performance.
