I posted a thread In January of 2022 as I started on a custom rifle build, including making my own stock using black walnut wood I harvested several years ago. I finally finished the rifle and am happy with the results, to say the least. The major components besides the stock are a Defiance anTi action, Bartlein #3 contour barrel, chambered and cerakoted by Alamo Precision Arms, Defiance BDL style bottom metal, Triggertech Special trigger, Limbsaver recoil pad, Montana sling, and Leica PRS 5-25x56i scope with Talley rings. I finished the stock with Tru Oil and had it checkered by Tim Smith-Lyon at Classic Checkering in a pattern similar to a Winchester model 70 Super Grade. Early shooting results are positive, first 4 shots included a bore sight shot and a 1” 3 shot group during final scope adjustment. Here’s some photos of the process along the way and the finished rifle:

How many different stylus and bit changes? I have a duplicator myself but have never cut a thing on it.

Thurmed out great. Be proud.

Looks great! I love that you cut the wood, how long did it dry? Did you cut it for a stock(s)?

I want to know about the duplicator as well. I always the thought the only people that would have one are professional stockers. Id love to have one, the $$$$$ has scared me off thus far.

I did most of the work with a 1/2” ball nose, then 1/4”. For the inletting I used 1/2” and 1/4” straight bits. My duplicator has a parallelogram pivot so I can drill vertical holes.

The wood was cut into 2-1/2” slabs about 5 years before I got started. I do have many more slabs and stock blanks. I actually built the duplicator, total cost was probably $2000. I agree that the commercial duplicators can be quite expensive, even for a basic one.
