Custom mini Canadian belt knife

I have used nessmuks, CBK, and semi skinners for years.. my favorite design is an upswept semi skinner with continuous belly very similar to a crotts semi skinner. It has many of the blade features of a CBK and is very ideal for field tasks from gutting, skinning, and breaking down big game. 90% of the time I'm doing gutless and the semi skinner is the perfect tool for me to complete that task. Mine is a Chisan custom to my specs in magnacut.

So top two below the CS are 3-1/2" ,third is 3-1/4", basic copy of the CBK but 3/32 wider same blade handle offset. 4 and 5 are different blade/handle offset. Orange is based off second from bottom...Micarda version off the top ones(CBK handle offset). My personal one will be 3-1/2 or 4" like the original.
Middle three are Magnacut .100 pre HT.

Has anyone tried using a Nessmuk style blade? It has many of the same "features" of the CBK (long continous belly, offset handle, leaf shaped blade), though the pattern is significantly different, and oftentimes larger.

I'd be curious to hear from someone who has used both knives.

I have, the neasmuk style knives I have tried did not have enough of a tip to make them useful quartering and deboning.

I've used this style (Nessmuk esh) for the last two years (three Elk)and really thought it was great for everything...then I saw the CBK,does the same thing in a smaller package.

This is a true custom with the grip custom shaped for my hand.. I have osteoarthritis in my hands so the scales shape is to give it maximum ergos for me. A bump out on the thumb portion and a scalloped cut so it can nestle in along the meat of my thumb when indexing on the blade with my index finger.
The upswept blade has the same long sweeping belly as the CBK. I had 3 CBK in my collection to pattern off..

Yes ricasso but I could blame that damn spell check... but that's on me.
Yes I really liked that style...time will tell if I offload them and replace with the CBK.
Nice thing about making them as I can make what I see. Next up the new MKC skinner.

I also have hand issues ,nerve/tendon damage on my main hand (cut all the upper tendons) so I hold a knife different than most. I have to hold them in my off hand to get an idea how others might use them. Nice knife!

I'm all about using the smallest blade I can get away with. That may be why I've never really tackled a Nessmuk. It just seems too big for my uses.

I've recently become interested in more traditional hunting patterns. I really like the CBK, skipped over the Nessmuk. I just made a Sharpfinger inspired knife. Haven't gotten to test it on any game, so I don't know how it performs. It seems to follow the same philosophy as the CBK and Nessmuk, lots of belly, offset handle etc.

That sharp finger is nice! Like you said more belly and remove the numb on the finger guard too utilize more blade.

I need to work on more guardless models. I have a hard time going with them, nut sure why.

Do you find that the guard gets in the way in use? I can't say that I've ever noticed an issue, but I've only processed a handful of deer and a bunch of little critters

I usually put ones I don't like in the vise to test HT, actually just did one that pi### me off today.

I'm the same never had an issue with the guard but most of my styles had the belly near the tip. With more belly it moves it towards the handle and then possibly the guard gets in the way. Notice Forms conment on the MKC CBK version with the guard.

I have seen that comment floating about. I wasn't sure if it was due to the fact that a guard or that the guard was obnoxiously big. I'm going to have to pay more attention to the guard in use, I've never paid it any attention

Trying to utilize the full edge of the blade I'll use the heel end of the blade right where a guard might be to hit the connective tissue in the knee joints. Guards can get in the way for that use. Yes you still might have to use the tip in there a bit but the heel will get most of it. Saves the rest of the blade for other uses. Just another trick to keep your total edge going longer (carefully using each section of blade for certain uses while skinning and breaking down animals). A #60 scalpel blade shape at the heel works great for this and I can see where the CBK should be good.

With the edge to the finger grove like the KOA Yukon #1 is a hard pass for me.. made one and cut myself with it.
I'm sure your's are the same ,rest your finger on the edge and you're cut

That’s a good looking knife


Like most of the Canadian belt knife copies being made, they’re missing the grip/blade angle relationship. I.E., their blade and tip is inline with the handle, versus a swept back blade with the original. The swept blade angle is what gives them the odd look, but also is what makes them skin and cut so well on animals.

Following these threads and looking to try a Grohmann style knife. This is a new one coming out from the Sthealthy Hunter and Mikejonesknifeandtool. If I’m reading these posts correctly, this version of a CBK is missing that angle to blade relationship? Any other comments on this knife? I see an S2H version is on the way soon also. Thanks in advance for any comments.
