Custom Hearing Protection

I have a set of Decibullz custom mold ear plugs with the percussive filter. I wear them at the rifle range and when hunting waterfowl in a group.

They work well enough that you can communicate where the birds and when the shot is called. Shots are well muffled. I pull a beanie over them to make sure they don't fall out and to that end, I'm considering having a rigid band 3D printed to connect the two plugs.

At the range, they've worked for everything that I've shot up to 7mm rm.

Does anyone use filtered plugs for hunting? If so how is your ability to detect sound direction? I have a pair of etymotic electronic plugs that are great for duck hunting but aren’t great for deer and turkey hunting because it’s sometimes difficult to pinpoint the exact direction a sound is coming from (got busted by a Tom last year that I would have sworn was coming up behind me). Solid plugs obviously are out and especially with turkeys it’s unlikely to be able to put them in before a shot so I end up hunting without hearing protection a lot

I picked up a set of Soundgear when they had them $100 off over on Long Range Hunting forum late last year. Problem is they have a high pitched noise if the batteries aren’t compressed into the ear plug. have to fiddle with it to get it just right. But then they work great.
It’s annoying.
