Was considering MKC but read some less than ideal things on here. Currently use outdoor edge with replaceable blades that also has a foldable convex “belly” blade that is great for zipping under the hide when skinning. 99% of the time I go gutless but a gut hook could be very useful for me when skinning

Anyone on here made such a knife?

Have you looked at the Dixie Zipper RS helped me me design?

The geometry of the blade makes it zip under the hide better than a gut hook.

I wouldnt use an actual gut hook.

Dixie zipper is sweet.

Bought a number of MKC but only one in my regular rotation is their little bird knife.

I have found none better than the Outdoor Edge Zip Pro. I use it on every animal, regardless if gutting or the gutless method. I've spoke to a few builders about creating a custom, but haven't had much luck. Everybody who's ever been around me processing an animal now owns one.

That’s the convex belly blade I was referring to, very useful!

I can't figure out how to copy and paste the file correctly, but if you search Outdoor Edge Zip Pro you can find the model I'm referring to. The Zip Pro is the folding model that has OE's best steel for that style of blade.

I have a Dixie zipper knife and I dont think its as slick as a gut hook for that specific task.

I think gut hooks get alot of hate because its like training wheels, but man they do make opening up a body cavity easy.

I made a modified copy of the Kershaw guthook out of cryo 416 stainless.
I'm working on a scaled down version now. The first steel didn't work out, going to try magnacut soon.

Me too :)...that thing is world's better/easier than a gut hook.

Duh, I carried this one in my kill kit on hunts from the buggy without much walking. It works good for sure.

That may be the case. I tried them for skinning, but not as much for opening the cavity as I learned the gutless when I started hunting. And, my one partner that guts animals does it so fast he just jumps in. He doesn’t like to stand around watching someone hack away.

I have thought about making a little plastic tip that slides over the point of the knife just for gutting, and then slides off. Guts are definitely different than skinning.

If you have any hunting to do, I will send you one to test.

Unfortunately, the four hunts I was on were a bust… hard year. I didn’t get any videos of the knife.

No videos. Why are we gutting things? Kidding, I do it at the end sometimes for necropsy, at that point it doesn’t matter if I get in to bowels. With the Dixie I just kept my finger on the tip blade facing away from the animal, no issues getting into the guts.

I wish I had the video. Not the guts, but I put the Dixie under the hide at the milk bag on a cow elk and went clear to the bottom of the chin in one smooth motion to show off for my dad.

I have used the outdoor edge. Also works good if it’s kept sharp. Same with gut hooks. If someone made a gut hook that came with a rod or recommended kitchen steel that fit it to sharpen it frequently it would be nice. After using the Dixie I would rather just use it because it’s so easy to touch up and keep it sharp.
The leaflike shape to the back of the blade allows you to apply pressure to a gut bag etc and push down, while your blade tip rides up where it won’t puncture.

The hook on this knife is easily the best I've ever used. This very knife has been in over 50 elk and just keeps making me happy.

I would buy a "quality" knife to compete with it... but I have a couple grand in custom knives and none work as well.20250101_204926.jpg
