custom 300 win mag question

Looking for some input on a Win mag running 215 berger hybrids.

Option A:
North West action works build:
-Trued rem 700 action
-fluted Krieger barrel 26"
-Fluted bolt
-Jewel trigger
-Pillar and glass bedded
-3 port break
-cerakoted
-Mcmillian A3 sporter edge fill
•Hawkins Long Range Hybrid Rings
-Ballpark $3300


Option B:
Lane precision Build:
-Lone peak Ti action
-fluted Bartlein barrel 26
-fluted bolt
-jewel trigger
-pillar and glass bedded
- 2 port break
- cerakoted
-Mcmillian A3 sporter edge fill
•Hawkins Long Range Hybrid Rings
-includes load workup
-Ballpark $5300

Can a trued Rem 700 action be as good as a Lone peak?
What barrel twist for the 215 berger 1:10 or 1:9?
Which would you choose and why? Or would you choose another builder/ change things? If I am being an idiot about something fire away....

I am leaning towards the cheaper one and putting better glass on it.
I am about to pull the trigger on one of these and need a push one way or another. This is my dream rifle and have hopes it will come in right around 7lbs bare rifle.

I am having trouble envisioning the full custom being that much with those components.

Off the top of my head (if I'm way off on something let me know).
Ti action is $1500
Fluted barrel blank is what $500?
Bolt fluting $100
Trigger $100-200
Bedding the already pillared McMillan stock $150
Break $150
Stock $700
Chambering and extra gunsmithing allowance $500
That's about $3800 and coating if needed rounds it at $4k? Where is the extra $1300 in that configuration? What am I overlooking?

You make a very good point and I agree but Lane makes some bad ass guns so I assume your paying for the name? I mean gunwerks, red rock precision, MOA rifles, etc charge a boat load for there guns... I am new to the custom game and trying to figure out what to do. I don't trust the gunsmiths in my area to build my gun of a lifetime.

FYI, redhawk rifles is a sponser on here now and they have some guns worth looking at too. I eyeballed some prior to having a semi-custom built.

The Lane precision includes load work up. What Redhawk rifles were you looking at?

I took a factory Remington 700 long range and sent it to Travis at Rbros rifles. I had him put a defensive edge break on, jewel trigger, 20 moa seekins rail, pillar bead, bought a ATACR advanced and nightforce rings from him which he mounted, wyatts extended box. All of this including the purchase of the gun I'm in $3600 with a scope.

It shoots under .5 moa no problem with the 215s. Biggest group I had was 2 moa with load development. The only 2 issues I have with the gun is:

The extremely long throat of Remington rifles. I have .020 room left in the extended box and I am still .035 off the lands. The load works but I would much rather be in the .005 to .010 range.

Also being a fatory barrel I'm not getting the velocity out of my load I thought I would get. I'm pushing the 215 with 78 grains of h1000 and I'm at 2850. It is still plenty fast but I think with a broughton I would be in the low 3s with this load. Just my $.02 but another route you could look at.

Well there is definately value in time/components there if you don't like to do that stuff yourself.

At the time I was glancing at the trued up action builds, I was looking all around trying to decide what to do (including nwactionworks) without having to sell a kidney. I ended up getting a donor Tikka M695 for cheap that I had rebarreled and a recoil lug added. Factor trigger on that gun is fine with me, still running the factory stock on it for now which I bedded. Its on my eventual list to upgrade the stock but it shoots quite well as is so other priorities for now.

A properly tried Remington action will shoot with the customs accuracy wise. The custom action feel so smooth and are built stronger if you're planing on push the limits load density wise. I have had 2 customs built on 700 actions and they are great rifles. But I love my rogue action built custom most of all.

I built mine on a weatherby mark V action and love the thing. 27" Broughton barrel with a 1:10 twist----73 grains of H1000, RWS brass, 2930fps. Matter of fact, I just picked up the stock today being I just got in hydrodipped in krytek highlander---it is really sweet.
You asked about twist rate and if I built another one, I would consider a 9 twist being that 230 hybrid looks interesting.

I think you would be happy with both options. With option B I think you would get a rifle that would leave you wanting nothing.

I am currently having my second rifle built by Pierce Engineering and will end up a little less than 3k. Bartlein, Jewell, Manners, Harrell's brake...
I can't see myself using a trued action when a custom is only a few hundred more and has more resale value. My current build is a 300. I would strongly suggest using the reamer Broz suggests on longrangeonly. I have had a SAAMI 300 before and I could never achieve the speeds everyone is getting with custom reamers. I drool over Lane Precision Rifles and Red Rock Rifles all the time I just can not personally see myself paying that for a rifle. Load development is a great time to get familiar with the rifle and adds some pride. On the other side it would be extremely nice to pull the rifle out of the box and verify the data and then go hunting.

issue # 27 of RECOIL magazine has a pretty synopsis on custom actions and some other very good info and insights - It covers 8 custom actions with price, weight and a ton of other specs for each including cost ... $1200-$1600 range - these are actions the very best shooters use, it might help with your decision making process - another article in it talks about the Tikka platform being very good for custom works

When the 215 Hybrid was released, it was recommended 1:10. Changed to 1:9 shortly after. They have also decreased the BC, so for those of you who got the Hybrids early, change the BC to the new confirmed BC in your calculators. That being said, 1:10 stabilizes them just fine.

I saw one mention of him above but i would absolutely call Travis at Rbros Rifles. His action, your specs, manners, broughton, etc for a price right between the two you quoted. He builds really nice rifles, tests fires them himself and includes a dummy round and data.
