If you were hunting OTC in Idaho, would you chase elk or muleys and why? Which is the best bet for a “trophy animal” , Which is best for getting meat meaning more opportunities. Let’s hear it!

Elk. Because they taste better, are more enjoyable and a bigger challenge / more rewarding to hunt, and I have deer all over my home state. And, when an elk tag is filled it provides significantly more meat than a deer.

Trophy potential is irrelevant. To me.

Gotcha. I was going to say as a nonresident, just getting a tag is a mess and complete luck. So I would take whatever tag I could get. But I would agree. I’m in it for the meat so Elk would be my vote as well.

Since you used the word “trophy” definitely elk. Finding true trophy mule deer these days is a big challenge no matter where you go. Of course there’s the question what do you consider a trophy?

The bigger question is, why limit yourself to just one?! Pick a zone that has overlapping seasons and chase the first one you run in to. After you pack that one out, head back up for the other.

Not to me…
Corn fed Whitetail, front range Mule deer or back country Elk, all tastes the same in my opinion.

In fact, over the last 25 or so of the above animals, the only bad one was a 340 bull.
Super tough, every cut.

The only deer I have ever tasted that was even close to being as good as elk was a young yearling Whitetail. Other than that elk every day of the week.
