Curbing snacking

So I guess I got really bored being at home for so long during covid that I started to snack mindlessly all the damn time. I think it’s probably the major contributor to my weight gain and not being able to get rid of it. Anybody got any tips or tricks or healthy snacks that I could eat?

Sardines, cheddar cheese, macadamia nuts, hard boiled eggs, bacon. But best not to snack at all. If you want to eat, have a full meal.

Eat an apple and do something active, OR don't eat anything and do something active. By active I don't mean going to the gym or out for a run, just up on your feet and engaged in doing something. Sweep the garage, wash/wax your car, dry fire your rifle/pistol, or any hobby activity you have.
The activity will take your mind off the desire to eat until that desire passes. Get on the scale every morning to remind yourself where you are relative to your goal and help boost your resolve. Snacking is a bad habit. Substituting another bad habit like Copenhagan isn't really a good choice.

Don't have it around. If you work from home, I can see that being tough. I do not have convenient access to food at work so unless i take food with me, I don't eat anyting until i get home. Sometimes that means I'm eating "lunch" at 2 or 3 oclock. Am I hungry? Yes. Honestly I feel like it is good for you.

If I'm feeling snacky I try to drink something zero calorie and clean. (Not diet soda or sugar substitutes) I'm really into tea. It helps with the feeling of satiety, keeps you busy, and a lot of times the "hungry" feeling is really your body telling you you're thirsty. I also like spindrift. Carbonation, fruit juice, water, like 3 calories. It's good stuff.

Well I wasn't sure. Lot of folks in these parts (and throughout the south) grew up with chewing tobacco. Some of them my age even have a few teeth left. I might have known if I had noticed your location is in your screen name.

I had the same thought except mine was Levi Garret plug cut. It may not be healthy but it helped me cut enough weight to make the cut for a military scholarship and pay for three years of school. Probably die of cancer 10 years to early but hey free school right!

For the record I don't chew anymore - quit after getting married 25 years ago

I quit a long time ago. It is hard to eat with a chew In though, not impossible but not easy. 😬

When you get up drink a bunch of water, it'll fill your stomach and reduce the urge to snack.

Snacking healthy all day is so much better for your metabolism and digestive system than eating 2 or 3 huge meals each day.

I consume 3,500 calories per day spread out amongst 5 or 6 meals.

Try a carnivore diet. It will change your life.
The carnivore diet has intrigued me but I really like vegetables, so I went with the paleo diet, I lost 100lbs in one year, felt way better so I Started lifting weights during the week and Mtn. Biking and hiking on the weekends and have maintained a 75lb weight loss for 4 years. It’s very sustainable and don’t see myself not eating this way in the future, the benefits have been too great. I do believe weight loss is in the kitchen and fitness is in the gym (or trail, etc…) It’s mostly meat and vegetables which I like so it’s not hard, you just have to decide that’s the rule. I do sway towards the beers and like some bourbon occasionally, but getting away from eating sugar, grain (I know, beer and bourbon have both of that…), processed food, etc has made the biggest difference. I always bring my lunch to work, usually a salad with meat leftover from dinner and nuts and hard boiled eggs for a snack. It also makes it very hard to eat out at restaurants when cutting out the non paleo stuff which is great also for the wallet, maybe once or twice a year which is usually a lettuce wrapped burger when we’re traveling or something. I have been thinking about doing the carnivore thing for a month for the hell of it just because it’s interesting to see what changes.

This will sound really unconventional....

Last December, we had a big snow storm and I ran out of Copenhagen. I have young children and I refused to drag them to the store with all the idiots driving around like....idiots, just so I could feed my habit. I was miserable for a week. I also made everyone around me miserable. I never wanted to be that miserable again, so I decided to keep on the wagon. After a month, I felt fine.

Then, I decided to keep on my health kick and lose some weight and prevent myself from being a type 2 diabetic. The treatment my doctor suggested made no sense to me, so I did some research. I found there was a lot of diet dogma, especially with diabetics. Again, it made no sense. I’m supposed to fight insulin resistance and high glucose by CONSTANTLY feeding my body with food, cause more spikes in glucose and insulin (which makes you hungry)?

So, I researched the human digestive system and how macronutrients are processed by the body. Long story short, we have the guts of a predator. Predators don’t typically eat as often as herbivores. Hmmmm.....

But, unlike Copenhagen, you have to eat to live. So it was hard to remember to stick to my diet. I figured if my mind was strong enough to quit tobacco, I could quit eating bad foods. I just needed to stop the instant gratification that exists with “hunger”. So, I decided to fast until my mind reprogrammed itself. I didn’t eat for 8 days. Water and multivitamins.

I tracked my blood sugar to find the times of the day where I have natural highs and I wrote them down so I could remember to QUIT eating during those time periods to avoid adding more glucose by eating. After a few days, I felt amazing. No more hunger or “hangry”. Since I wasn’t allowed to eat anything, I lost the drive to grab whatever was offered to me. I then limited my foods to things with no ingredients. If it is packaged and has a list of ingredients, I avoid it. I eat mostly meat, fish, eggs, and low glycemic vegetables. After 4 weeks, my blood sugar is now under control. I’ve also lost 12 pounds (no cardio, just weight training).

A side benefit has been no more stomach issues (I always had a rotten guts, probably from over-using them). My digest tract has become way more predictable.
