Cuben Fiber, Anyone Using It?

Here is the complete membrane silpoly tarp 9x9. So far really happy with it. Ive had it out in the yard pitched nice and tight and no failures so far.

13.6 oz for my silpoly 9x9 tarp with linelocs, enough cord for a handful of different pitches, stakes, stuff sack and seam sealed. Ill report back on durability in a few months. tarp1.jpg

For tie out reinforcement I used the same material and glued circular reinforcement patches then stitched around the edges. as described in this thread
Reinforcing 0.93 osy Membrane silpoly - Backpacking Light

All in all it was a nice material to work with. and pitches well. Very affordable compared to cuben fiber.

Cuben fiber is great. I've got packs and tents made from it. Light, strong.

Tents made from syl nylon stretch out when they get wet. In a rain storm, you will need to re-tension the guy lines to keep it taut.
Cuben does not stretch at all when wet. Tension remains taut during rain.

Only real downside of Cuben is cost and you can't use it to do stove/hot tenting, as it will melt.

I had the Ultamid 2 from HMG. It was noisy in rain, but nothing I couldn't live with. What bugged me is I could never get it to pack as small as I wanted. I understand that may have been user error, but I sold it and bought a Tut that packed smaller, and permits me to stand up inside. I'm OK with the weight penalty.

I have four backpacks. One is a ZPacks Blast that I got 6 or 7 years ago. It weighs at a whopping 8.6oz and was shipped in a envelope. I use it for day hikes and for weekend backpacks in three seasons. I've gone ultralight with all of my gear and find that at day's end I am much fresher than I was with a heavier pack. I can also push the pace harder and longer.

I also have a McHale pack that is very heavy but can carry 120lbs. I only use it during winter backpacks where the weather conditions require that I carry more in my pack.

I love the ZPacks Blast and would recommend it to anyone. The newer models that Joe sells are a tad heavier weighing in at plump 21-27oz, depending on the particular pack. I would highly recommend cuben fiber. I have not found the pack to be noisy at all. It is also waterproof so I save weight by not needing a pack cover. Let it rain!
