Creepy experiences in the backcountry

I have a bizarre experience to share.

In 2004, my cousins and I were out fishing one summer night in Rothchild, WI. We hiked to the fishing spot at dusk, about 1/2 mile down from the dam. It was getting dark and we were deep in the woods with the river in front of us. The trail was behind us and ran perpendicular (left to right) to where we were facing, about 20 ft away. The area was in total darkness. Around midnight, man's footsteps walked on the trail towards us from behind, coming from our right side, in darkness. Being so late, it didn't feel right nor made any sense. I could feel the hairs on my skin stand straight up. The footsteps continued to walk passed our group. Now that the footsteps is behind us to our left, it stopped, turn around, and proceeded walking back toward us. When the footsteps arrived right behind us, my cousin turned on his flashlight, shined his light at the man, and we saw nothing. No one was there. We freaked out, packed our gear in a hurry, and went home.

Sorry to say, but there are no effigy mounds in Rothschild. That whole area along the river was my playground while I was growing up.

Not a creepy story, but a strange find in the woods. While hunting in CO years ago, me and my brother stumbled upon water line about 4 miles in on NF land. As we followed the water lines down the hillside, we noticed backpacks and bags of fertilizer. Then the wind changed and we got a wiff....weed. There were pot plants everywhere. Some areas had piles of pulled plants and others had it growing waste high. A bunker was dug into the hillside and acted as a water holding tank. We snapped a few pics and checked the area out. We called fish and game on the way out. They informed us the area was raided a few months prior.

Can I ask where (general region if you don't want to share) and when? Back around 2008 or so (I could be off a year or two) while hiking an area not far from where I lived in the Front Range Mountains I ran into irrigation lines and other equipment and when I searched the internet I found out the year or two prior it was a marijuana grow that got raided by law enforcement. The article said they used helicopters to airlift a few million dollars worth of plants out of the National Forest.

The explanation isn’t as scary as to what lead up to it but here we go.

We have a “big” event where myself and a few buddies all get together and go camp and shoot in the national forest here in Texas. Normally you can bring friends with you if you’d like and usually most people bring a buddy or two. We’d been out hiking and shooting all day and had got back to camp and made some food and just started to hang out around the fire swapping stories. Hours past and most everyone had gone to sleep, still had a few people awake hanging out around the fire and talking etc. Anyhow my buddy and I are sitting in my truck just talking before we got ready to rack out for the night, it’s around 100 in the morning at this point and we hear about 5 shots in quick succession REALLY close to the camp. He and I get get out of the truck both armed with pistols and another guy from sitting around the fire joins us with his rifle, we’re waiting behind the truck on edge thinking it’s some jackass in the woods trying to scare us or even a tweaker (we’ve ran into tweakers out there wayyyyy out in the woods before) after about five or so minutes we see a figure coming out of the woods. We’re both about to light this dude up, just at that moment my buddy shines a flashlight on him and see it’s just some jackass another one of our friends brought along with him. We both say “What the **** were you doing shooting at there at night first and second without telling anyone” he told us “well I forgot to take my pistol out earlier to shoot it and I wanted to shoot it”. I really wanted to pistol whip that jackass, but instead settled for giving him a good ass chewing. Everyone went to sleep after that and didn’t have any issue the rest of the trip, needless to say he wasn’t invited back next year.

So you're saying he was there twice? His first and last time?

In these kinds of examples showing zero common sense and general (forget situational) awareness, you wonder how these folks get through life, but they often shomehow do.

lol basically I should have clarified it was someone another friend brought that he met through work. The guy (the one shooting) told him (my buddy) that he was “a huge outdoorsman and loved hunting, shooting, camping etc” so he thought he’d be a good person to invite. Luckily for my buddy when they went back to work the guy found a different job shortly after and left their company.

I agree though, you see these people with room temperature IQ’s and wonder how they haven’t accidentally killed themselves through their own incompetence, it’s even worse when they somehow made it to middle or advanced age.

The last post reminded me a something that happened when I was a kid that I have not thought about in over 30 years.

I was 6 or 7 and we lived in a two-story house. The top floor was three bedrooms and a bathroom. My older brother and myself shared a room. My sisters was across the hall and my parent's room at the end of the hall. If looking into their room from the hall all you could really see where windows which were at the front side on the house.

The rule was to not go into my parent's room if the door was closed which it normally was on a Saturday morning. One Saturday I got up early and started down the hallway as the door was open to my parents' room. I saw in front of the windows a figure which I would describe exactly like the last post. It was dark and kind of the like the evaporated effect he described.

I was not scared of much back then but ran back to my room crying and would not leave the room until my brother checked things out and the cost was clear. In fact, I think it was over a month of having my brother check before I would be the first out of the room.

Hearing a large cat scream when i was about 10 yrs old alone and roaming with a .410 was pretty freaky.

Weirdest thing was (about 15 years ago) getting down off a bow stand just after dark on a new moon night and i turned on my red headlight to walk out. Walking as quietly as possible about 30 yds from the stand i saw two wide-set red eyes about 6.5' - 7' off the ground and stopped. We both stood there a few seconds and then whatever it was took off ran off the other way. I'm 6'1'' and it was taller than me. My guess is the red headlight made the eyes reflect red. Still have no idea what it was.

Bear have red eyes. No idea how the red light would work with them.

Odd guy, dressed in all black with a black leather jacket. I talked to him awhile and he said he was headed North to the Dulce Alien Base to gather intel. We talked about the alien base mystery for awhile and I told him to be careful up there since it sounded like he planned on possibly doing some trespassing. My camp wasn't far from his and so after our conversation he writes down a phone number on a business card and says "If I don't make it back in the next few days call this number. His Name is Frog." Well he didn't make it back that night but eventually showed up late the next day and said he wrecked his motorcycle in a ditch on private property near Dulce and the cops took him in for questions. Not sure how he made it back to camp without the motorcycle since it was over an hour away and fairly remote. I will always wonder who Frog was though. Maybe MIB? I still have his number...
