After spending the past year+ researching and collecting gear for a backpack archery elk hunt, a medical issue has sidelined me for 4-6 weeks. The good news is that I should be easing my way back into things for the whitetail opener in Michigan and a friend invited me along for a Wyoming mule deer hunt!(Region A)

Being 11 weeks away I’m trying to read and learn as much as I can before I go. Do you guys have any suggested bedtime reading materials? I liked the Ultimate Guide to Elk hunting and ElkNuts Playbook for elk hunting info and am looking for something similar for mule deer hunting.

The book by Robby is a good read, or Mike Eastmans book. I'm still a noob myself but those books were both very helpful.

Yep, Mike Eastman, David Long and my favorite Robby Denning all have great books. Robbys book seems to speak to me in a way no other book has done. His articulation of thoughts and words is unmatched in my opinion. To sum it up, it's a must read! Get it!

AGREED. I moved to WA from WI last year and in that time have read basically every thread on Rokslide and both of the books mentioned by PNWGATOR. Locating deer has become WAY easier with all of that new knowledge...that is for sure.

The problem I have with David Long's book is that it feels focused on hunting mule deer in one kind of terrain: semi-open high basins/draws with ribbon cliffs. That's great if that is the terrain you hunt, but there's nothing like that around me. I've heard Robby's book is more well rounded in that regard, but I haven't read it yet.

Thanks everyone. I have been reading everything I can on here and around the web. Based on everyone's recommendations I think I'll start with Robby Denning's book and go from there. I'm going to have plenty of reading time on my hands in the foreseeable future. I doubt I'll be as prepared as I would have been for my elk hunt but I might get close.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Nick

I can definitely tell that I am new here and to mule deer hunting. It took me 3 chapters to figure out why there is so much love for Robby's book here on a forum that he moderates. LOL.

I started reading last night and have been impressed so far. I had to force myself to stop reading so I could get some sleep.

Book gets love because it really is a great resource. Robby moderating this forum is just an added bonus
