Resident. I’m prob reading wrong, but sure looks like I got screwed some how. Everyone except for 2 people w 2 points drew (buddy and I put in as group and didn’t draw) and some 1pt people drew. I’m at a loss.

Color me surprised. They finally issued a NR tag for EE001O1A and the winner of that miracle drew with 8pp. Not knowing how to read the stats paid off finally.

Because they put in for preference points every year. Preference point code is a first choice code so shows on the first page of total applicants.

Those guys didn't apply for a tag; they applied for another point. The last 2 pages of the recap report show the stats for preference point applicants (hunt code EP99999P).

They will likely collect a point again next year too. I think it's just a game to them. Because they will draw whatever tag they want when they actually do apply in 2028. Only way for them not to draw is to apply as a group with someone with low points and go for the top 4 units still. But then someone would have to give up their hunting for so they can continue to accrue points.

Check your buddy's point balance. You wouldn't be the first guy to get screwed on a group application by a buddy with fewer points than he thought/said he had.

Assuming you're both residents, the only other possible explanation I can think would be if you two put in for different sex tags and one or the other tag ran out of quota.

Imagine being the guy that has 34 pp and puts in for an archery tag knowing this is his year. And so does another guy with 34 points... fighting over 1 tag.

Next year going to be wild for any premium tag. It is shocking to see how many points it took this year to get several tags that I've held...all of which were 2-4 point tags just in the last several years. One is now 14!

BUT...there are still several ways for NR to go hunt elk each year...and I'm thankful for that!

As a CO resident I'm pretty annoyed with the fact that more tags got allocated to non residents than residents in the unit my 18yo son and I put in for and didn't draw. I think most folks, myself included until recently, don't realize that the 75/25 tag allocation only applies to 1st choice draw. If tags make it to the 2nd round, that 25% cap is apparently thrown out the window and in this case MORE 2nd choice tags were allocated to non-residents than residents and more tags overall (1555 of 3000) for this unit were allocated to non-residents than residents and it's not because residents weren't trying to get them. If you applied for this unit 2nd choice as a non-resident you had a better chance of drawing than if you put in as 2nd choice as a resident. Thanks a ton CPW.

The point is of all the residents and nonresidents alike who weren't "committed to really trying to hunt this unit" the non residents were allocated more tags than residents. That's hardly the 75/25 split that most people think is at play.

Yes, because there was a lack of resident hunters that applied. Unless I'm reading that wrong every 1st choice applicant received their tag. You're upset that a NR used their 1st choice and "bumped" your 2nd choice?

Same thing happened last year......... and 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021.

2028 rules change to the split will apply to 1st and 2nd choice.

If it makes you feel any better I'm a NR that played the odds with this unit as my 2nd choice and did not get a tag.

Hmmm seeing plenty of units not going 75/25, and yes there are plenty of residents applying. Wonder if they are taking the landowner tags off the top of resident tags?

You'll likely find the whole truth even more annoying...the 75/25 allocation doesn't rigidly apply to 1st choice either. The 25% cap on NR tags is a "soft" cap that only takes effect if there aren't enough tags to satisfy all 1st choice resident applicants.

For the hunt code you mentioned, 32% of 1st choice went to residents (664 adult + 56 youth) and 68% went to NR (1485 adult + 70 youth). 2nd choice split was 46% resident/54% NR. Sorry that you didn't get to have your cake and eat it too.

Put in for 1st choice then...

MT residents complains about this too, particularly for B tags. "They should only get 10% of the licenses because it's a special draw!!!" Well, no resident wants them, then the same residents get pissed off when a NR gets what they didn't want.....sound logic.
