Cotton or wool

Depends on what you mean by rugged.

Cotton will be more durable.

If temps are such you wouldn't want to be naked in them, then wool will be safer.

Synthetic will be more durable than wool and safer than cotton in the cold.

The cotton will keep you cool as you sweat it out. If it is cool to cold wool will allow you to get wet and still maintain warmth. Synthetics will keep you warm and are light but can be noisy in dense foliage.

I've moved away from all cotton in my garments, while hunting. Now, I enjoy t-shirts, cotton shorts, etc. just for everyday stuff.
