Cost to repaint car

I understand prices will vary, depending on a few factors, but I’m debating if the cost is worth it. Thought I’d get some numbers before setting up some estimates. A coworker had her Toyota repainted over a year ago and it was pushing $3500.

2017 Hyundai Sonata, 95K miles. Clean body, not dents. The paint is literally flaking off in sheets. No warranty. It’s my commuter car and paid off. If it’s anywhere near $3500, that’s a hard pill to swallow on an 8 years old vehicle.

Anyone recently repaint a 4 door sedan and not have sticker shock? lol

My architect business partner was getting quotes for $5-7k for his Tacoma in the SF Bay Area.

He took it to a friend of a friend Robert at Miracle in Modesto and it was $2300 I think he said. Painted it a cool creamy race car blue it looks awesome.

I had to get a quote for a honda civic about 8 years ago due to a warranty dispute over chipping paint. The quote was 4500 or 5k i think. I knew paint was expensive but i was shocked.

A cheap paint job is not worth it. The overspray and orange peel could look even worse. A good paint job is expensive and you better love the car to make it worthwhile. Or a collectible.

Yeah, the car is no where near worth what a new paint would be.

I wouldn’t spend money painting a 100k mile Sonata. Drive it until a whole rust through the body and water lets water in.

How ratty is this car? How much do you care? And how handy are you?

I have seen some nice paintjobs put down with a rattle can and in one case a roller. Granted these were on $200 pickups so all standards left the room a long time ago. But it was still an improvement and from 50 yards they looked pretty sharp.

Brother just did one after chopping the top; gonna be $1,000 with primer/hardener and paint/hardener, sand paper, etc, and doing it all yourself.

Zero chance I’m paying a dollar to paint that thing. It’s a ghetto with or without the paint job. Drive until the wheels fall off, which shouldn’t be long. 😂

Contact your local vocational tech schools to see if there are any programs where you might get it painted on the cheap. If you have it painted the same color, it will be cheaper since you wouldn’t have to paint under the hood, door jams, etc. You’re not looking for a full restoration, but something that looks halfway decent.

Probably still not worth it, but worth a little investigating.

If there’s not an opportunity to have a class do it, the teacher might have a kid or two that is apprenticing and would take it on.

If the paint is peeling, the whole car needs to be stripped to the metal. Prep will be crazy expensive unless you do it yourself or find a decent auto body person to do it "on the side". I'd do it myself and paint it with a good etching primer and tractor paint close to the original color. I like to piddle with stuff like that though.

I have a 26 year old suv that I want to keep as long as possible. It spent many years in FL and baked by the sun. The paint started getting rough a few years back.

I paid $900 for a cheap maaco paint job. The guys who initially did it admitted to having a new guy do it. After a year it started to peel a bit in a few spots. They have a warranty though and fixed it. It’s going on three years now. It isn’t perfect, but it meets my needs to prolong the life of my rig a few more years and looks better than it did. I don’t regret the $$ spent.

This is about the only way to get a budget paint job.

I would run from a $3500 paint job...

I'm redoing a 96 Bronco, the paint is my big hold up.
