Copper Mono Success on Big Game

I killed two very large boars this am with a 6GT and a 90 gr Hammer HHT. Quarter away, back of ribs up into chest. Both of these are on the entrance side. Both shanks were stuck in the armor on the off side.

I was able to get this guy Monday evening.
He came out with about ten minutes of legal shooting time.
Ranged at 270 yards, 130 grain ttsx handloads with an average muzzle velocity of 3170 fps.
Tikka T3X compact, 308, 20” barrel.
He dropped in his tracks right where he stood.
I’ll be processing him this week so I’ll add pictures of the wound.
Very happy with these results.

Whitetail doe with a Cutting Edge Lazer 160 .284. Impact velocity 2750. Bullet performed exactly as it should. Lots of internal damage, caliber sized entrance hole and estimated 3” diameter wound channel. Recovered one petal under the hide on the far side.

130 ttsx going about 3100MV from a 308win.

Whitetail buck shot broadside at 80ish yards. Bullet was recovered on the offside shoulder almost completely flattened. My other experiences with this bullet have been complete pass throughs all at longer distances.

Last year's mule deer @ 475yds - Factory gold box 6.5-300 wby 127gr Barnes LRX. 2449 fps 1691 ft LBS @ 500 yds according to Adam. The bigger hole, the one that I have my whole mitt jammed into is the ENTRANCE hole. The buck did a circle and fell over DRT.

Switched my 6.5CM and 6.5G to the Hornady CX lines of bullets this year with the superformance powder.

1. 6.5G 90 Grain CX out of a 12" barrel

I was elevated above the buck at about 100 yards. Shot was quartering to and impacted high shoulder on my side. Bullet was found in the skin on the far side just poking out of the skin by the back ribs. Deer dropped and died within seconds. Lungs had about 2" of damage. Entry hole was about the size of the bullet.

2. 6.5CM 120 Grain CX out of a 22" barrel.

160 yard shot and I was slightly under elevation. Deer dropped and the hot entered mid body straight above the leg and came out high side on the opposite side. Entry hole was about the size of my thumb and exit was about the size of a golf ball. Lungs had about 3-4" of damage.

I’ve never recovered any monos at this point… I’ve used them with success, but like to tinker with things, so I’m always trying out other projectiles.

2023 - 267 Hammer HHT from my 338 RUM. Weirdly enough, most of these shots ended up being 400-430 yards. All complete pass throughs.

Cross post from the bigger than 6.5 kill thread:

Mule deer buck shot at 50-100 yards with a 300 WM/180gr TTSX multiple times (shoulder, neck, guts). Went 50 yards and bedded down. Was finished with a knife to the throat 30-40 minutes later. Caliber sized entrances and 3/4-1" diameter exits.

After the rodeo on the buck, a dead doe was found hidden completely by sagebrush from the shooter that was killed by a pass-through from the buck. A 2-3-inch entry wound in the shoulder and the bullet was found caught in the neck (under the skin before the photo was taken). The neck skin was cut and we found a fully expanded 30 cal 180 TTSX underneath (Game and Fish was contacted upon finding the doe and the situation was resolved with a game warden).

Cow moose shot 3 times in the chest with the same 300 WM/180gr TTSX mentioned above, it went 50 yards and died within a minute. Two passed through, one was found in the offside hide.



We also helped another hunter get a bull moose on the same hunt, he shot it 3 times in the chest with a 270 (don't know the bullets) and it went 30-40 yards (towards us, which was exciting) and died within a minute.

Mono coppers have been good to me.

300Blk- 110gr Barnes Blacktips have put several deer into my freezer, and a few Florida hogs.

350 Legend- 140gr Bear Creek Ballistics loads have carried the day for me for the lasts 5 or 6 years.

Recovered bullets:

300Blk- one recovered from the neck of a 200lbs hog shot straight on, nicely mushroomed.

350 Legend- two recovered nicely mushroomed, one with a petal broken off frm hitting bone.

All kills have had extensive internal damage and those that ran, died within a few seconds.

Forgot about this one - 194 Lehigh subsonic from my 300 BLK this weekend. Whitetail doe at 100 yards. Shot through the lungs - bullet exited. Down within a few seconds.

We’ve had very good results with the 130gr. TTSX out of a 270 Win and the 145gr. LRX out of a 280 Rem. No issues with either. Fairly quick kills and moderate to little meat loss. Both launched very close to 3,000 fps. Had they made the 139gr. LRX when I picked the load for the 280 I’d have tried it first.

Small whitetail doe to Moose. We keep ranges moderate and impact velocities up. Everything under 400 yards. IME the key to mono’s is impact speed, so pick a lighter ish bullet and drive it fast, like you plan to. I also prefer a tip to help initiate expansion and hopefully avoid a bent/collapsed tip and little to no expansion.

6.5 PRC 7.5 twist 20” barrel 125 McGuire copper rose. 3130 MV avg
25 yards, 3087 approx impact velocity
Hard quartering to me. Impact neck above shoulder and exit behind opposite shoulder. Immediate incapacitation. I did not get pics during field dressing but I pulled out a few chunks of lung along with the main lungs. Smashed the neck vertebrae and fragmentation evident throughout wound channel.

2 more McGuire kills. 125 copper rose both magazine fed going 3130 avg at the muzzle.
First big whitetail doe at 47 yards high shoulder quarter to, 3054 approx impact velocity. Immediately incapacitated. No pics but similar to buck in post 273.

Second small doe. 105 yards 2955 approx impact velocity. Quartering away entrance behind shoulder and exit out opposite shoulder. 50 yard sprint 8 seconds to incapacitation. Multiple exits including opposite rib age and shoulder. While gutting the heart fell out and the top half was gone. Pieces of lung removed during gutting. Only 3 kills thus far at high impact velocity, but this is much more destructive than the CX, trophy copper, Barnes, typical mono performance I have seen at similar high impacts velocity with larger calibers.
