I run 3-strand electric rope-have about 3.5 acres split between 2 pastures but I can only pasture them about 4-6 weeks as my pastures are not irrigated. The rest of the time I hay them. I have never had an issue with them in the fenced pasture. I keep them in relatively large corral areas throughout the winter as we typically have 2-3 feet of snow on the ground here throughout the winter (they stay pretty close to the barn). Probably average about $1,200 per year for hay for all 6 depending on current price. My 3 big packers graze off the grass and forbs in the high country most of September (they love the high altitude stuff). You might consider getting a couple of young llamas now so you can work with them. Takes a couple of seasons to get them in a packing and trail routine and they would be less expensive. They would bond pretty readily with your goats-some folks use them as guard animals.Llamas are still an option, just trying to do some research to see what might be the better fit. The main thing for me is the cost to aquire the llamas which I know you can find some deals every now and then. This is still a couple years out, so maybe I will just keep an eye out and see what happens.
How are llamas with fencing? seems like they don't much for feed. right now I have 7 goats and they go through about 1/3-ish a bale of hay a day.
