As a self proclaimed radio geek , I really feel that MURS frequencies are the best way to go for no license needed comms. I can get 2 miles or so in a little big city from handheld to handheld with aftermarket antenna. Mountains will probably get more depending on terrain of course. No license required.

If you really want to unlock great radio comms, ham radio license is the way to go.
But honestly, in mountains while hunting, fishing or just hiking, I rely on InReach to InReach communication. Just bump up to the highest plan for a month or two and get unlimited messaging.
