Well, I just finished applying for CO deer and elk. I have one point for deer and should draw. Looking forward the the last week of august season. I like having a couple of weeks back at work before elk hunting.

You should easily draw depending on unit. We have noticed that the earlier you apply the more likely you are to draw (than someone with the same amt of points that applied later), so having applied on day 2 you should be fine.

Can you explain how that works?

I honestly don't know and the DoW doesn't really specify the process for those with the same amount of points. It could just be coincidence, but my dad and I have noticed that we draw our first choice more often if we apply as early as possible. We used to apply in the last couple weeks and were drawing every other year until it was suggested that we apply earlier and have never missed since.

Yeah I saw that when it came out last year but it was much easier to quickly sift through the units before and rule out the ones I didnt have points for. The new report is way better overall I guess.

Fair enough - you could use the reports from '14 to get close then compare the front runner units on the new report to see how much they have crept.

Agreed, the old ones were much simpler but the new ones have a lot of useful detail. I am confused by some of the new ones though. Take EM010O1M for example. There was one 6pp that drew and the next lowest was 18pp when it appears plenty of people applied in between. Perhaps I don't understand how the draw works as well as I thought I did or simply reading the chart wrong.

Everything I needed was in the old reports. Don't like the new arrangement. Have to sift through too much crap to get to what I want.

That is the hybrid draw tag that went at 6 points - lucky guy...

Didn't know they did that for Elk. Thought it was only for Sheep, Goats and Moose. I just looked it up and had no clue they started doing that in '12. I think I will hit 5 points after this year, so I will start putting in for one of the 1st rifle draws. I think I remember it was a Rokslide member that said he got it with 6 PP, which I supposed was because less people applied for muzzy without looking at the stats. The problem I have with the lottery system is that if you do happen to win you don't have all that long to get things planned (or get in shape in the case of sheep and goat). I wish they would draw for these species a lot earlier to give you a little more warning.

Thanks, yeah that's what I had always assumed that it was supposed to be completely random for everyone with the same amount PP; but the practical experiences were contradictory. Must just have been a coincidence then that success rate seemed to be tied to how early we applied. In fact our switch may have coincided with the 2012 break up of the muzzy tag into smaller units. But now I guess it has kinda formed into superstition and I have to do it early. :p

They don't do a hybrid draw for sheep, goat, and moose.

Yeah, shoulda stated clearer. I meant that I didn't think they did a lottery in any form for elk. Although the hybrid from my understanding is a true lottery (for the 20%) vs the weighted lottery of the species mentioned.
