Hunted this unit last year with very little action during the pre rut...I’ll be there during the peak rut this time around. Any info I can get from some hunters would be much appreciated.

What info are you looking for? The Grand Mesa Units are, in my experience, hard to find the elk. Its big country, heavily hunted and recreated, and overall not in my top 20 units to spend my elk season. There are elk, and I have had luck cow hunting here and 421......but not what your probably hoping for in an elk experience.

Haha well you called me on an arbitrary number I threw out there to drive a point home. I dont have a top 20, nor do I think 521 is "bad". I spend every 2nd rifle season there or 421........but Im sure there are least 20 better if not more! My dad likes it on the mesa, so I go with him

How do you know when peak rut will happen?

Well, I’ll be there for 11 days, all around the fall equinox...so I’d say my chances are up there. But that’s not why I posted this thread. Just looking for some info buddy.

Wow the stats on that are unit actually pretty good! The number of archery hunters is pretty outrageous though.

I've hunted it. Its a good unit overall. The biologists say the Elk numbers are on the decline in the area though.

It has good elk terrain, fairly easy access, and its a big unit. Cons are I'm willing to bet its one of the busiest units there is. The few areas that are off the beaten path that we hunted had permanent outfitter camps set up in them.

Try to find the thickest cover you can because all of the open areas will have guys in them bugling. Then wait for the elk to get pushed into the thick stuff.

So Sept 22 to 23 is the target date. But actual breeding in my experience starts way before that and then cows that aren't bred will come into heat again in October. The October thing is very hit and miss.

Everyone I see hunting in 521 uses an off road vehicle of some type, or at least I see a lot of them....

It’s nothing like it once was!
I’ve moved on from that area, much better options out there.

This. That unit is over run with sheep, hunters, hikers, mountain bikers, 4 wheelers. There are far better places to chase elk OTC in the state. Lions and bears have been hammering the elk and deer herds. They are in pretty sad shape.
