Those firefighters don't get the credit they deserve. They are out there in 100* heat wearing fire apparatus, and putting their lives on the line with no end in sight. I hope the Heavens can dump some liquid on them (and the fires) soon. They sure need a break. Local news here said they are expecting "some" rain today, but might not be enough.

Yes, we had this same talk this morning. The hard part about the sheep tag is that he would be back to slim chances of drawing anytime soon since he only had 10 weighted points. With deer and elk, if you turn your tag back in and choose to restore points, you "should" draw again next year.

I would imagine we will run across some deer and elk, so I thought I would offer to those who have the archery deer/elk tags what we see.

Scratch that, he turned the tag in.

Man...…..this sucks, I took 285 last year on my way down to where I like to hunt and it is some beautiful country. I really hope Colorado gets some hard rains soon.

Just looked at the Accu Weather map, and it showed significant rain from Denver to Pueblo, and a few showers in the Southwest corner of the state Cortez to Montrose. I hope it helps.

He turned his sheep tag in? Did he do that because of the fire or for other reasons?

Because of the fire...

His dad and myself told him to hunt it, all the CPW folks, guide/outfitter customers in the area, and friends told him to turn it in and keep the points.

Weather.com is showing showers over the affected area—I sure hope it helps put it out and/or slow it.

Crazy! The sheep in that unit ( I assume S12) are all above Timberline. The area is huge and he had plenty of options. I would have hunted that tag without a doubt. The way Colorado changed the tag structures, he may never see "Draw Successful" again as it pertains to sheep.

I am keeping an eye on this.. I am planning on drawing a 49 elk tag next year.. If it burns this year with a good rain next year will good under growth start to happen?? Or does it take more than one year for those burns to re grow and attract elk??

Decent rains on the fire today, w a flash flood warning there this afternoon. And a tornado near the fire! 40% chance of rain tomorrow. Containment went up to 15% today, that will fluctuate. Better chance of significant precipitation starting next Wed, per Wunderground.

If the fire gets contained soon and get a little rain it will be a good area this year. Next year will be very good for sure.

I saw a report that the fire had moved into the Wilderness Area. They said the WA would be closed until the fire is out.

Yep 5 is right they closed the entire wilderness as well as much of 4 mile yesterday. With all the access points from Trout Creek to Fairplay closed on the east and the wilderness closed on the west - shuts down pretty much the sothern half of the unit.. Yesterday they were saying a containment date of August 7th but the fire will burn after that. So there is the reality now if we dont see rain of the wilderness closed for awhile. For sure much of scouting season and maybe longer.

It is a big area and as of yesterday a lot of it just closed. Again with rain it could well all be open only time will tell.

A couple of pics from 7/3

All local residential evacuations east of the fire were ended yesterday. Check inciweb link in OG's post #38 above for detailed discussion of crews, resources, air assets, and emphasis on handwork by ground crews in Buffalo Peaks wilderness.
