Colorado Unit 49 burning.

I have a friend in 49 and a fire started west of 285 around CR 22 yesterday and seems to be getting bigger. Just wanted to give the guys that drew it a heads up. He said it started on the Forest land and is moving north. Unfortunately it has gotten a few house's too.23472.jpg

Hell yeah, it's a big un. Almost as big as the Durango 412 fire. They call it the Spring fire and it is up to 38,000 acres already! The main Verizon tower was destroyed yesterday and many in the the San Luis Valley without cell/internet service as a result. Thankfully Ive got ATT and so far so good. They say the fire is headed towards a main power relay station and if it burns most of the SLV will be without electric for a while... lots of generators being sold! Hope it doesn't spread north through the Sangres.
God bless those effected and those in it's path

Yep, a bunch of units on fire right now, and we're just getting started if we don't get a bunch of rain. Of course with the rain comes lightning.......and more fires. That Spring fire down in unit 83 and 85 absolutely exploded in one day from ~4000 acres to 30k acres......and now over 40k. It's as dry as I've seen it in a lot of units around the state. Might be a good year to go to Idaho and hunt, since they have OTC tags. These fires have already thrown a wrench into our summer camping trips. Will be watching closely as we get closer to the season.

It's the driest I've seen it in the twelve years I've lived here. Was up shooting archery in Bailey today, the grass etc was just straw brown. Pretty scary!

Co-worker has an archery sheep tag, so those of you who have archery tags and want some intel in August send me a PM

The only problem is, they'd need to turn their tags back in by July 26th (30 days before the season starts). That's a tough call now since they changed it to 30 days.

Yes, we had this same talk this morning. The hard part about the sheep tag is that he would be back to slim chances of drawing anytime soon since he only had 10 weighted points. With deer and elk, if you turn your tag back in and choose to restore points, you "should" draw again next year.

I would imagine we will run across some deer and elk, so I thought I would offer to those who have the archery deer/elk tags what we see.

Fire is on the south east side of the unit and will likely at least double, triple, or more in size it is now.

Phones are spotty and no inet here in Buena Vista since Thursday and they say it could be another week til we get it back... Hwy 285 totally closed as they closed the FairPlay to Hartsel hwy 9 sneak.

They are throwing around stage 3 and we could see the Usfs close everything soon.

Last year was the driest I've ever seen that area. And without a decent winter this last year, and without any decent moisture this summer it will be worse than last year. It was like walking on potato chips last year.

this was yesterday from about 30 miles east. We got one camping trip in and probably no more this year.

I have another buddy around Aspen and he has been sending me pictures of a new fire that just started in Basalt. It's already around the houses and town. Hopefully they can do something with it because it could get real bad.

Significant Events
Active, crowning, short crown runs, flanking.
Continued warming and drying trend over the next two days. Fire behavior concerns will increase due to continued warm and dry conditions mixed with atmospheric instability. Dry thunderstorms in the area with possible strong gusty outflow winds and lightning.
Outlook
Planned Actions
Secure established lines in Divisions A and D. Construct direct fire line where possible and indirect line with burnout, with support from aircraft and heavy equipment in Divisions M, P and Z.

Projected Incident Activity
Lower humidity and warm temperatures combined with moderate winds will produce low fuel moisture in exposed fuels leading to increasing fire behavior. Possible thunderstorm activity in the area has the potential to push fire outside containment lines.
Remarks
Hard closure in place on HWY 285, between Otero Junction and County Road 22, PSICC National Forest closure in place for the portion of the forest included with the Weston Pass planning area.
