Since we all get the free fishing license this year I'm going to take along a fishing pole on the elk hunt the last week of Sept this year. Can anyone suggest a fly pattern or two for that time of year for fishing the small mountain rivers around Gunnison? I have a fly rod but I'm entry level, I usually use spinners like the Mepps or Panther Martin here in WI I suppose that would work in CO, but wanted to try the fly-rod to for giggles.

I'd call one of the local fly fishing shops and ask them. If you have the time, stop in and talk to them when you arrive and buy the flies from them to ensure you have the latest info.

Ants and grasshopper patterns can be fantastic in the late summer early fall.

I'm never without ant, hopper and beetle patterns in the high country. If they are smaller, swifter streams without a whole lot of pressure, get you some attracter dries that float well. Adams, Royal Wulff, Humpies etc.... Some high mountain lakes might require you to downsize and match the hatch a little better.

yep good advice and do when you get there and get the latest and greatest. calling months ahead is good but weather patterns fires and just bad karma can alter even the most steadfast patterns. usually the more you buy the more the shop owners talk too...

First of all, fly fishing is very addictive. I don't fish any other way anymore. Along with all of these great top water guys, get an assortment of prince nymph. Get some with and without weight. They are a great dropper setup. You can have one floating along under a big floater like a hopper. You will pick up the big fish that isn't quite willing to expose himself on the top of the water. If they are really finicky, I have cut the little wings off and made a super small profile.

No fishing allowed until after the hunt is successful!!
