I've got my first elk hunt lined up for 2nd rifle season. I started thinking I should try for mule deer as long as I'm out there, but obviously missed the primary draw dates and I wasn't concerned before since elk is OTC. I'll be in the Durango area (74/741/75). Anyone have any idea what draw odds are like? I don't mind donating to CPW, but without at least getting a point out of the draw I'd like to go into it with some reasonable expectation. (for the record this is my first western hunt and I've never participated in any draw so I'm a total newb...)

Those unit are separate in the draw, meaning a tag in one isn’t good for the others.

All 3 units were fully drawn last year in the primary draw: no leftovers. So it that holds this year your only hope will be a returned tag

Thanks for the input. I knew they were separate units, but it’s in the general area where I’ll be (I could travel before/after elk hunt).
I knew that about not being able to get a point, which is why I didn’t want to bother unless there was a shot.

I wouldn’t bank on the second draw. There will probably be a handful of tags for those units for deer (tags that didn’t get paid for or were turned in) if the leftover list the past few years is any indication.

My guess is that we will see a fairly large number of people putting in since all the guys building points (or who struck out in the regular draw) won’t be losing any points putting into the second. Add in guys looking to scoop up a deer tag to go with their OTC elk tag and what will probably be low tag numbers and it’s a pretty long shot IMO but at this time nobody really knows any odds.

My thoughts are it doesn’t take a whole lot of applicants (15-30) going after 1 or 2 tags for odds to get pretty bad.

Yeah like mentioned above there have not been any tags for those units to make it to the leftover draw (now secondary draw) the last two years. There might be some on the leftover list in August from people who turned them in or couldn't pay.

This is what was available last year on the leftover list for those units. 1 tag for 74 and 16 for 75.
They were gone in under 30 minutes the day they went active to buy.

Based on some re-issued tags in the past, they come available the Thursday/Friday before season starts.
Many times, hunters have already purchased their tags and are en-route to go hunting.

Just a tip :)
