You sound like you'd be a lot of fun at parties...I think people should do whatever they want with their money. Heck I'd dish a few bones out for a trespass fee if the right price and opportunity showed itself, but man I tell you. I could never have some guy over my shoulder trying to tell me how to hunt and when t o pull the trigger.. **** that. I dont see how their could be any satisfaction on just pulling the trigger and basically not doing much else. That's shooting. Not hunting. How is that an experience.?
Don't let people fool you. Put yourself in the right situations. Look into high hunts. Draw points in every mule deer state. Pick general tags with good gene pools. 180 is certainly more then doable on public land. People do it every year.. Lots of people.
A guided hunt is what you make it. You can absolutely sit back and play "follow-the-leader" and make your only contribution a trigger pull. OR, you can contribute to the team. Glassing, splitting firewood, hauling water, packing, pouring over maps, cleaning and cooking. My pops used to tell my brother and I "you make your own opportunities", and that applies here.
You also might look at your guide as a buddy who's been hunting the area you're in and is invested in you having a fulfilling experience, and that maybe you should heed his advice. God forbid someone knows more about hunting a certain area than you do.
