Hey guys and gals! I’m looking to book a hunt in Colorado and just looking for input regarding Outfitter suggestions, prime weeks, peak of rut etc.
I am partial to the rut hunt and looking for 180” or better. Price range is $8500-$10K.

Thanks for any input!

I would just start looking at the photo galleries of various Outfitter Websites until you find one that has a bunch of Bucks that look like ones you would shoot at. Most Outfitters have pricing and season dates on their websites as well. Good luck.

Go hunt has an outfitter search engine
Can sort by species, hunt state and gmu.

I'd take a look at some of the late eastern plains muley hunts on private land. You won't be battling public land hunters and 180+ is a real possibility. There are generally quite a few TF type bucks available. 180+ elsewhere in Colo can be hit or miss depending upon winterkill, migration, snow levels, and other factors.

Just curious...does $10k enable a guided hunter to a 180 class buck? Seems cheap compared to the effort and hours most of us invest in scouting and hunting DIY public bucks. I guess that is why I have always been partial to Muleys but maybe the times have changed :(

With the right outfitter in the right place, yes. DIY public land is an amazing experience, but a big part of that is how freakin hard we have to work to get one chance at a buck like that...

Amazing how much $$ people will spend on a set of antlers. smh
why Is him wanting to spend his hard earned money on a Guided hunt a bad thing?? It’s his money why the hell do you give a shit how he spends it? Maybe he has more money than time and can’t properly scout a unit or maybe it’s just not his thing to spend 10 days in a tent in the snow freezing his ass off in a place he’s never set foot in there could be a million reason he wants to do this so who are you to judge.... smh

I hunt very hard in Montana and have hunted my whole life. I just felt it was time to go with an outfitter if I ever want to hit the high 180s into 200. Yes you’re correct it is a lot of money and that’s why I was looking for “helpful” feedback and not to be judged. I believe that’s why this forum was created?? To the others on here, thank you for the calls and suggestions!

It generally takes a heck of a lot of pref/bonus pts and a bit of luck to draw limited tags in the best units throughout the west or big $. The odds are stacked in your favor if you have $! You can hunt every year by buying landowner, Jicarilla, governor's tags, etc. if you have $. Doesn't seem fair to us blue collar guys! If you have the $ head to the Jicarilla ($17,000 for a general license that doesn't include a guide)!

It's also a drag waiting 10 to 20+ years for a special tag....once a tag is drawn something unforeseen happens such as winterkill, lack of migration, poor weather, loads of OTC elk hunters, etc! The same thing could happen to someone that saves a lifetime for a guided hunt! There often is a lot more to a hunt than just drawing or buying 1 special tag! It sure would be nice to have deep pockets and being able to hunt quality units every year! I guess a guy can dream!

Eastern plains. Do some research and you should be set. You could also go north to Alberta and get a great hunt.

At some point I’d like to hunt dall sheep. Not being a resident of AK or Canada means that I’ll be spending money on horns.

I also spend money every year applying in multiple states for multiple species. That all adds up to quite a bit of money.

I hope that when I finally can afford to book a hunt in AK or draw a tag I’ve been applying for for many years I’m not judged for it.

I think people should do whatever they want with their money. Heck I'd dish a few bones out for a trespass fee if the right price and opportunity showed itself, but man I tell you. I could never have some guy over my shoulder trying to tell me how to hunt and when t o pull the trigger.. **** that. I dont see how their could be any satisfaction on just pulling the trigger and basically not doing much else. That's shooting. Not hunting. How is that an experience.?

Don't let people fool you. Put yourself in the right situations. Look into high hunts. Draw points in every mule deer state. Pick general tags with good gene pools. 180 is certainly more then doable on public land. People do it every year.. Lots of people.

Totally understandable! What I didn’t mention in my initial post was the fact that I have hunted my whole life and harvested my share of trophy animals, including deer. The purpose of this hunt was to experience something totally new and hopefully seal the deal on a big muley. Nothing more and nothing less!
