DM001O3R. Season Dates: 11/09/2024 - 11/15/2024 I'm next in line for this tag and need to claim in the next 3 days. VERY concerned with the winter kill. Anyone have thoughts or live in GMU?

If you haven't been scouting it recently to know that is where you wanted to apply, then I would pass if your primary goal is inches.

I would take almost anybody else's opinion over mine but just until others chime in, I would be very concerned. I don't hunt in 1 but I do hunt nearby and that whole corner took it in the shorts, as you know. Elk are hardy and mostly pulled through, but pronghorn and mule deer suffered quite a bit. I was talking to a ranger when I got tag-checked and he said they expect it to take several years for the herds to recover - maybe as much as 5-8 years for the pronghorn. Just FWIW.

NOTE: I remember him saying it's because elk migrate much more and mostly shifted to areas where they could still find forage, but deer and pronghorn are much more territorial, didn't migrate far enough, and many of them starved to death.

I know but read the winter kill was pretty bad last year
