Colorad unit 54 elk help

Put in on my first CO elk draw, and karma was good a buddy and me got drawn for an archery tag. Never hunted Colorado, and planning on doing a backpack hunt. Been looking over maps and doing as much research as possible. Does anyone know much about this unit, and where's a good place to get on some elk, places to stay away from, or past experiences? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm the host at soap creek campground (coal Mesa trailhead). Feel free to shoot a PM. I've only made it about 3-4 mile radius around camp shed hunting but I'm constantly expanding.

That is beautiful country. I have hunted elk in there. It is steep..

Merc, I sure will. We are planning on hunting the last week of archery. Do you have an area scouted out yet?

I wish I did. I'm stuck overseas until Sept but I'm planning on going in a few days early and going to be going in solo.

I've identified a few places on Google earth I think should hold something. So I'll try plan A and if they aren't there then on to B and C. I'm not holding my expectations super high as this is my first elk hunt.
