Collectable for a new born?

Getting ready to have my first kid, by best friend and his God father were talking and he wants to get him something "special" that would mean something to him when he's older. We both agreed we would like to be able to get him stuff but put it up until he is older and can appreciate it. We both lost more knifes than we could even imagine to count. My father in law is buying him a life time hunting license.
Only thing we could think of is starting him a set of case knifes and a display case. And wait till he Is out of college to give it to him.

I dated a girl for around 5 years or so some years back. Her friend was having her first kid and named her a godmother. She spent months fretting about what to get her, she ended up buying some fancy heirloom kids books. I bought her a spa frog, basically a washcloth with a frog head on it. All we heard about for the next year was how much the kid loved the spa frog. Lol

Came here to post this! Heck, I actively won’t take family china, old knives, and stuff like that. (I do have a .22 lr and .38 special heirlooms.) kids are so unpredictable, who knows what they’ll like, what their (or your) financial situation will be, what their housing situation will be, what their spousal situation will be, etc. Better to start an account like this and spend some money down the road on experiences they’ll truly treasure.

That is understandable. Maybe make it more of a commitment to stay involved. If they dont have kids, they will struggle to understand the dynamic shift to a kids first approach.

You will be amazed that from only a few months old he will have a favorite Disney movie, enjoy watching colorful dancing vegetable videos, and Ms Racheal. They can be a lifesaver when you need him to stay occupied for a few minutes.

I really like the idea of Case knives and Rich M's idea about coins. I didn't think of the Case knife idea for my son until he was 8. That's when I started him a collection. He is now 12 and I get him a new Case knife every Christmas. I plan to continue until he's at least 18. I wish I would have thought of it when he was 1. If you go that route check out the Case knife that says on the box "My first Case Knife". I don't let him carry/use a y of them.
I'm also a coin collector. I started my son in the hobby as well. Can't go wrong with silver.

I’ve bought my kids and my hunting buddy’s kid a silver dollar each year starting the year they were born. The oldest is 9 so it remains to be seen if they appreciate it, but I think it’s cool.

I'll go a little different, though I like both of those suggestions, what about Federal Duck Stamps along with your state's duck stamp? Of course I am talking about the physical ones. Buy him that every year, don't sign them, very nice pieces later in life.
Now if you really love the little bugger, buy him the Federal Duck Stamp print or actual painting, the year of his birth and your birth, side by side on the wall.
