What are some of the better units to put in for points in CO.
looking to go out in 2018 and want to start putting in poiints to possibly draw a better unit than OTC

you don't have to pick a unit to apply for preference points. There is a point only option when you apply, though you still have to front the cost of a license.

Colorado now offers better leftover tags and you can pick up 3-6 point elk tags without using your points this way. It will be years before you'll draw prime units but you'll still get to hunt great units until then.

While true they started reissuing turn in tags to the leftover list good luck getting one. Those were gone in seconds this year. Unless you work at a store that sells tags to monopolize the first couple seconds when they go on sale good luck...

For the OP, yeah you just apply for a point and don't need to specify a unit until you are actively trying to draw it.

Yes the 61 and 40 tags which are 12-15 point tags were tough. But because everyone was trying to get those tags it made the 3-8 point buck and bull tags easier to get. All my buddies and I got good tags this year because of the leftover. Just my two cents since I will likely never get to hunt the 20+ point units

Were you in a small town w/o a line for the tag machine or such? Sure wasn't at one of the major places around here, there were lines...

Anyways its irrelevant to the OP and last year was the first time they did that, don't be shocked if it evolves.

I was also in person waiting in line for a leftover tag and no dice for me being the third person in line. I guess it'll be worse this year now the secret is out

I was only suggesting since the op wanted to hunt something besides otc without wasting his pp...

I'm pointing out the tone seemed to suggest its a cake walk to grab those turned in tags and the reality is it wasn't (congrats to yourself and buddies that did get some) and who knows going forward either. Yes there are certainly are lots of true leftover options to review and obtain to hunt aside from OTC as well. Just don't bank on snatching up multipoint turned in tags year and year was my caution.

Did not mean for the confusion. No it isn't a cake walk and yes we were first in line. For us it was worth the effort so we could hunt better units.

no need to wait in line after the first list all the other lists the tags could be purchased on line from your computer. Myself and my buddy got premium tags this way. I heard they are restructuring it next year so we will see what its like

CPW announced "refinements" to the reissue process for next year. Any license that took 5 or more points, if returned, will be offered to those who were next in line in the original drawing. And to claim that license in reissue, you will have to give up your points. So the only licenses available in the Tuesday morning free-for-all will have cost 4 or fewer points in the drawing. Another change will be a big price increase for exchanging licenses, designed to prevent people from exchanging licenses multiple times. Stay tuned...

I have friends that got premium tags in the reissue free for all and more power to them, but I'm all in favor of this. What they did this year didn't do anything to help point creep, which imo is one of the biggest problems the Co draw is facing.

I agree point creep is Colorado biggest downfall. Utah hardly gets anything right but if someone turns their tag in it goes back down the drawing list. Best way in my mind. Yea I took the day off and drove over and camped out waiting/hoping for a miracle tag. Then system come alive briefly what a cluster

Oh I tried like crazy to get my wife a buck tag so I have no problem with the people that got tags. If they were going to offer it we were going to try.

But in reality the guy that had 12 points when it took 13 to draw should have gotten that tag ( and had his points wiped out) rather then the person that hit "Submit" at 9:00.

Looking at some of the list they could have removed 1000's of points from the system which would have helped long term after several years of doing this.

I don't have dog in this fight, I don't really bank Colorado points other then enough to draw the low point tags I'm after ( 1 or 2 point tags)
So I would really benefit from the way they did it this year, but I would like to see my kids be able to draw good tags without waiting 40 years.

Agree. Point creep is far out of hand in CO. The previous reissue plan was good in utilizing previously unused licenses. It was a missed opportunity to remove points from the pool. In fact it increased the point pool by reissuing high-point licenses without costing points. The new plan will not reduce total points, since the surrendered licenses get points refunded. But the same # of points will get spent on reissues.

My understanding is that no points will be taken during the Tuesday reissues, so you can get a 4 pt license on reissue, and use no points. Up goes point creep on that transaction. Plus, if I return a 3 pt. license to claim that 4 pter, 3 more pts go back in the pool. So reissue INCREASES point creep, under the old and new reissue plans.

At the commission meeting I attended they made it sound like the next 5 would only be the first list that comes out in August and the subsequent lists after that would still be a free for all. They also had no explanation if a non-resident happened to be one of the next 5, but the non resident quota had already been met for that unit in the original draw of what they would do in that situation. I agree that it is not doing anything to help with point creep as I know a few people who are banking on the re-issue list and will build points. Also know one guy who turned his tag in, got his points back and was able to purchase his tag back on the re-issue list so he can hunt a good unit 2 years in a row.
