Jake brakes, mountain bikers, drainages you can't cross...

Yup, you were in 74 alright. :D

Tcub, your plan on Hermosa would be a good one any other year. But after that fire, I would say no. But I haven't put my boots on that ground in a couple years so who knows.

74 is a gorgeous unit with everything I want. It's crowded, but with as many non-hunters as hunters, .

Mi biggest concern in 74 and the reason I asked is because it’s not one of those units where you can go 6 mile in on horses to get away from the hoards of hunters. It seems like no matter where you go in from at some point there’s a road within 2-3 miles. North to south, he’ll even the highest elevation in 74 still has roads within 1-2 miles, of course this is just from looking at multiple satellite maps. My understanding is that the 416 fire did not burn at high intensity across all acres burned. A lot of spotty moderate heat and a lot of habitat never even got burned which will be very good for regen.

That's my understanding of that fire as well but I haven't laid eyes on it.

There aren't a lot of places in 74 to go miles deep, if that's what you want. Having said that, the biggest bulls (if you're after trophies) I've seen in 74 have been within a muzzleloader shot of a main road. LOL "they are where you find them" is certainly true there.

You have to keep in mind that 1-2 off Trail miles in unit 74 could easily take HOURS, if it’s even negotiable at all. You’re talking steep drainages with complex cliff lines choked with avalanche debris, log jams, blow down, scree slopes etc. Unless you’re on the alpine tundra, you will not be taking horses off trail and off trail travel will be out of the question for 97% of foot travel. My first Western Hunt was in 74 and we spent 3 hours getting 1/4th a mile (off trail) from the truck. Do not underestimate how steep and rugged the terrain is.
