CO Loads

Planning on drawing a CO deer tag this year and I do not have any experience with conicals. I am shooing a .50 cal Thompson Center Encore Prohunter. I am looking for any advise on loads to try including powder.

Another question I have is should I get a peep sight? I dont really mind the fiber optics but I am just wondering if a peep would be worth trying.

I would try Thor bullets and some BH209 powder. Thor's shoot really well out of my T/C. Peep isn't necessary but might increase your range if that matters.

I had planned on switching to the BH209. Any advise on how much powder to start with? I don't know anything about the Thor bullets so I will check them out. What grain does your TC like?

If I remember right Thor only makes a 250 & 300 grain bullet. I'm using the 250 grain. Go onto BH209 site to see if they have any data for powder charges. If not, it's like anything else... start low and work your way up to find the "sweet" spot.

Got my Colorado mulie with 110 grains BH209 and 300 grain Thor last fall. The Thor is a sleek bullet and you can get them in a range of diameters to fit your rifle exactly. Mine liked the .501 diameter. I will probably use the same load again this year, but I'll also be looking at the 350 grain Hornady PHB as I will have elk tags too and would like a heavy bullet that will also expand well or fragment upon penetration. The Thor bullets penetrate well and retain their weight, but the exit wound was quite small on a pass through shot for me last year. Then again, he didn't move from where I shot him so can't complain.

I am also planning on trying peep sights for this fall. The front fiber optic dot on my Williams fire sight is just too darn big. Fine at 50 or 75 yards, but covers up a lot of the target farther out.

I am planning on a rear peep and thin blade for the front site. The size of the fiber optic dot is just what got me thinking about another option.

I found that truglo had a significantly smaller fiber optic. Williams peep, truglo front bead, better accuracy for me. I'd have to go look at the package to see which truglo it was...

I think I am going to get the PeepRib system from eabco. I like the idea of being able to mount my scope and leave the peep on. If I was ever hunting with the scope and had an issue with it I could just remove the scope and use the sights.

Search Sabotless and look up Sabotloader's threads on shooting pistol bullets. Hornady FPB should work ok in a TC

precision rifle makes Colorado legal conicals. I've shot them and they are great bullets. If you check the Rok Blog, I killed a deer with one last year in Colorado. Was very happy with the bullet's performance (not so much with my aim, but hey, what the heck)

Just had a fine brass bead put on my son's rig. Mine is already setup with peep and fine front sight. I don't care for irons and find that peeps give me more precision at longer range. Not a Powerbelt fan, but a lot of good conicals out there. The old rule of 2x diameter has been removed so a guy can shoot longer conicals legally. Got a fast twist 45 to try out this summer with some heavies. Good luck on your hunt.

You can't go wrong with the 300gr Thor for elk. I've seen the 250gr take bulls, so the 300gr is a no brainer. 110gr of BH 209 will be perfect.

I like the old sidelocks myself. I'll be using the 370gr maxiball with real BP. My shots are all close though. I don't worry about a bullet with a good BC.
