Co gmu 47

Anyone have experience or insight here on CO GMU 47? Was looking for something that would be challenging terrain and hopefully a bit less pressure for my first backpacking elk hunt. Seems like the limited access and the overall terrain should play into that category- anyone have any first-hand info regarding Elk numbers (or even muleys, going to put in for a deer tag there as well), patterns, etc? I have been drawing up some plans, doing some virtual scouting, and plan on spending some significant time out there as the season draws near to scout a bit- but very open to any information someone may have. I've hunted north of there...up by Eagle area. I've been interested in 47 though. I've heard that it can tear your heart out...sort of use to that when it comes to elk hunting. I did a drop camp on the northern end of the unit. It was OK but we picked a different unit last year. We were 1 for 4 but really only saw 12 elk between us. We saw even less deer. The outfitter said not very many deer at all in his area. I would be willing to go back but would concentrate on the south eastern side of the unit.

Will shoot you an email bull, and I planned on scouting the SE side a bit, I see two main entry point options that I'd consider, just a matter of where to branch off from there.

I'm open to anything, Highcountry- brand spankin' new this year to elk, and very aware that I know very little when it comes to making a successful trip. Going to be a busy few months of learning and preparing, but to say I'm excited is an understatement!

Used to hunt it back in high school around the woody creek area. Only killed one bull out of the area and that was in the third rifle season. I know some locals that seem to do alright in it but its never really been known as a hot area. Majority of the people focus on the surrounding areas; 444, 44, 43 and so on. Not great deer numbers from what I've seen.

I've been pouring over 47 as well. That is where I'm planning on going September.

Will be out opening day for a while and then off and on after if no success- heading out to scout things a bit in probably July. Happy to share my findings with ya once I can put boots on the ground

For sure, I'm going to do the work anyway and don't mind helping- I figure my chances during archery will be the lowest- but plan on taking a cow during rifle as well, so you may be able to offer some insight after your trip to help that goal!

Hi, new to the site. Just glad there is a place like this.

Saw the topic of 47. Been thinking about going there as well. Had a buddy scout it for me last year, but i didn't go. Liking woody creek over to midwa lake .looks like tuff country, which I kinda like. Buddy saw some elk, said they were scattered and high. Hope that helps

I will be heading to GMU 47 for elk this September for my first elk hunt. I have been doing a lot of research and have contacted the biologist and gotten a little information from him. I am just looking for someone that has been to the area and could answer some more specific questions on things like what creeks are crossable or not? Any experience or help would be greatly appreciated.

Elk will be high during archery season. Some wicked terrain in there. Get in shape. Most of the elk and sign we found started around 11K+ feet and went up from there. A lot of the elk were at or above timberline. Very popular recreational area. You will see a lot of recreational hikers and campers. Even high.

Main creeks are pretty wide, fast and fairly deep. Best option is to take off your boots and pants to cross them. There is water everywhere in the unit.
