So not sure if I should post this question here or clothing but thought I’d go here. I’ll be hunting last week of August in CO high country archery for mule deer this year. Trying to decide on rain gear. Here’s the two options I’m considering.

1. Bring my full set of Sitka cloudburst pants and jacket. This offers most rain protection but not sure it’s needed at that time of year. Especially if the forecast ends up with little chance of significant weather.
2. Bring my Sitka Timberline jacket and no rain pants. With the dwr coating this should cover for quick rain showers or a drizzle for a couple hours. Also dual purpose for mornings and glassing or if it gets windy. I know rain gear can do this as well but this is more comfortable and quite. Plus this would be less weight.

Currently I’m leaning towards #2 but want to get guys opinions who have hunted this time of year in high county CO.

Thanks!

I have a pair of very light and very waterproof jacket and pants and they are always in my pack. I consider them part of my emergency gear. Together they weigh less than a pound and I have needed them many times when I thought there was no way it was going to rain. I learned this one the hard way after years of ignoring my past expeeriences.

I have spent last 3 seasons in high country colo and I cannot think of more than a day or two in the 25 or so days that this encompasses that it did not rain on me. To me it is as essential of gear as my boots or knife. It sucks to be wet and cold 5 miles from truck in 40F weather. Often these daily monsoons include hail, sleet, and snow. Just my 2 cents. I use first lite rain gear. Pit zips and side zips on pants are best thing they ever did for rain gear.

High Country in late August? If you are backpack hunting, You need real rain gear. Period. If you’re hunting out of a vehicle or base camp with dry clothes available, you could get away without rain pants. Sure, pop up storms usually roll through quickly, but those storms can absolutely dump and if you’re strung out above treeline, you’ll get drenched without proper gear.

Thanks guys, it is a backpack hunt. Nice to hear from some with experience in that country. Looking like may need to go with rain gear.

Full rain gear for high country backpacking! As mentioned, the monsoon weather can be anything falling. Wet and cold is not safe and could get you in a bad situation...

Rained every day on me in the first week on August last year. Rough stuff too, hail, lightning that was so close it bout scared me to death. Wouldn't even think about a Walmart Poncho. Dropping into the timber helps shield you from the rain some, but I'd still bring the very best you could with regards to rain gear.

If it’s above freezing when you’re heading out each morning, you’ll be walking through dew in temperatures in the low 30’s (even in August) then sitting down to glass with wet pants. Not a life and death matter, but just another pro for pants.

I got caught above treeline in a hail storm yesterday. I didn’t have pants, but I could have use just then just as a defense from the hail. We didn’t get any lightening, but some of the surrounding peaks got it and what looked like hammering rain.
