CO Archery Elk

I messed around and drew a CO archery tag this year, I'm thinking of waiting until late season to try and hunt while the bulls are talking finally. Anyone know if the elk are pretty vocal in CO?

I'm editing the post to make everyone happy.

In my experience elk in southern Colorado are not very vocal, especially in OTC and low point units. I have not hunted much late season, and am curious if some of you that actually have experience in Southern CO (and not just police the forums) find the bulls more vocal late season.

Elk are vocal animals in general. They can and will talk 24/7/365. Whether they want to talk to you is a different story

Take your unit out of your post.... you'll get more responses without it, and its frowned upon.

Dont try and predict when the rut is gonna take place, its probably already starting in some locations and it will go through October.... it changes day to day, week to week, weather, etc. etc. etc.

Just comes down to when a cow comes into heat and they dont run on a set schedule, your just hoping to play the odds and they wont always line up.

Best you can do is be out in elk country as much as you can, before light, after light, and as many days as you can muster

A recent CPW study has determined the elk in the unit asked about are the most vocally advanced in Colorado. CPW states that most 1st and 2nd year age class animals understand basic words/commands and older animals can make simple sentences. Trophy bulls have limited understanding of of Spanish, but they are rare.

I can bugle in Spanish, but only European Spanish, it’s real lispy

I took it out for you Kind of defeats the purpose though, I've hunted other units around here and killed a bull last year but haven't been fortunate enough to be into them being vocal much. I've usually hunted earlier through mid season but haven't done a lot late season.

Answer on them being vocal: sometimes. Depends on a lot of factors, if the born and raised enthusiasts are around bugling ever 3rd step… it will shut them down, if cows are in heat they will be talking, it all just depends. But yes elk do vocalize in September in Co

It’s here to talk about gear and obsess over minute details/ yell at the sky about small cartridges vs whallop ect ect… the days of sharing unit specific info are long gone or at least should be, some of us who live in the west are tired of the non stop pimping

If you killed a bull last season, you shouldn’t need to worry about this specific area having bulls that bugle more or less in a given week or so. I’m not saying that to be a jerk, but with your experience, you should be just fine in a limited unit vs OTC. Good luck and have fun.

Yeah, I guess I could have given more context and less specifics so people could actually focus on what I was asking. Mainly just looking to get into bulls that are talking a lot. I don't need the information because I cannot be successful without it, just more looking for a conversation. I'm learning though, I've come to the wrong place for that, hahaha. Thanks for reply, that's pretty much what I've experienced the last couple of years around here. First couple days of season a couple bulls may talk a little but not real interested, after that through 3rd week just very sporadic. It may just be what it is around here, hoping one day to get into them being loud and crazy, but I'll shoot him if he comes in silent too, lol

Last year had a little 5 point come in silent on my first cow sequence in the area I was hunting, ground was wet and he was SILENT, went to move forward and he's looking at me at 20 yards, I learned quickly keep an arrow knocked until you KNOW nothing came in.

I know, it's crazy! And from 1 day to the next too it can change. I hunted first 3 weeks of season last year almost everyday in a couple of different areas and heard maybe 7 bugles the whole time. My buddy went a couple of times in the last week and bulls screaming everywhere, smh.
