CO 3rd Rifle Thread

Well I guess I just suck at glassing then.
Nice work!
We saw tracks, just never saw the animals making them. Was that guy chasing ladies around up there?

He was with a few does and a smaller buck, but it didn't seem like he was really rutting. I ran into him in a meadow that we knew they had been using for forage, got lucky he was mature. Saw a few forkies and passed on them.

Hunted unit ** this last weekend. Managed to harvest a nice 3x4. Saw 5 bucks before taking him. He was the only one with does.
It's insane the number of knucklehead road hunters hopping from pullout to pullout with their spotting scopes.

Don't post about specific units please. Road hunters that might have gone elsewhere might be enticed by seeing six bucks on a hunt.

Drop the unit number man, or you will have even more knuckleheads in the future and a harder time getting that tag

Now that the unit number is gone let’s see that 3x4!

Gonna get one last crack at it tomorrow afternoon have a drainage with 10-20 does that hang in it, hopefully a buck will have shown up then
I feel like I don't know how to hunt anymore. Multiple groups of does and I have only seen 1 buck that has since disappeared. Last year same time and place (of course with an elk tag) I was spotting some tanks quite easily. Oh well good luck!

Yeah man last year I was seeing bucks with every doe group and had a full on rut fest at 10 am in 50 degrees with 5-6 bucks running 10 does around on day 3 of third rifle. It’s hard to say seems like it’s kicking off a bit later in the unit I’m hunting this year but that’s what makes it fun,

Saw does all week, but not a single buck with them. I stopped sitting on the does and started hunting a small area I cut several big tracks in. Did not see a deer for two sits, and then tagged out on a decent 4x4 yesterday afternoon feeding out in that area.

Bucks have been and are rutting where I have been. Going to be a great last 2 days for folks that held off.

Lots of em getting killed = big or small does not seem to matter. With that said this snow is helping get a lot of the top end buck left killed. Couple of flat out monsters have been killed I know about.

If you are not finding bucks on the doe you are watching move as I have seen 1 hot doe w 12 bucks on her early this week and by yesterday every single buck I saw was "stupid" on a hot doe.

2 days left....

Love to hear that!

Been here since season started, seems like most bucks are still heading to cover shortly after the sun comes up. Evenings are really slow, we’ve seen a moderate amount of rut activity. Seen lots of elk too that seem to be higher in elevation than the deer. We’ve got one tag left to fill out of 3 been a good hunt. Most bucks we spot after sunrise are bedded in the cover.

Killed a mature buck on Sunday was with a smaller buck that was trying to bump 3 does who didn’t seem interested. Seen 6 legal bulls in 2 days also biggest was 7x6

Hunted in the SW, my group was only out a few days and we saw quite a few smaller bucks (110 to 130"). Not much rut activity. We ended up punching all three tags on small 3x4's.

Just had a buck stalk ruined by an entire elk herd of 200+ head! Spotted the buck from 1400 yards and moved in for a stalk. Also spotted the elk herd in the other drainage probably 3/4 mile away from the deer. The elk herd just rolled over into the drainage and the deer booked it. Elk ended up walking downhill about 600 yards from us before it was too dark.

Come to find out there was 2 groups of hunters that spooked the herd. Thermals were not in their favor. Blows my mind that people think they can beat the wind.
