CO 1st Rifle Weather Warning

I was lamenting the opener being pushed back to Wednesday, but if it opened tomorrow as it has for the last several years, it would make for a very difficult season.
Ya, I heard something on the news about the 15th, so checked the big game guide and was shocked to see first rifle starting on a Wed.

In September 2013 where I was hunting got 15" of rain, but it was spread out over two weeks. There were still rivers of water even in places that weren't a creek bed. I was hiking out one evening and had to cross 3 or 4 "creeks" of running water 6-8" deep that hadn't flowed water in any of the decades I've been in there. Gets even more interesting when there's 4" of hail floating on top of the water.

1st rifle is going to bump back 1 day every year for the next 5 years until it lands 1 Saturday later than it used to open.

2013 was insane. In Wyo we just got the edge of the system that parked over Colorado and it was still terrible. Breathable rain gear and waterproof boots were exposed that week as frauds.

It rained so much that year that I didn't even bother with rain gear. Soaked head to toe every day, but even when it's dry out my clothes are soaked with sweat, so not much difference.

I almost died being stuck in a tent with nothing to read and no cell reception. It’s true, you’ll read the labels on all your gear out of sheer boredom. The Unibomber 104 page manifesto was probably written while stuck in a tent for a few days.

I recommend downloading LP Wx app for weather in the area from what I’ve been told it uses some new wether station in the Durango area seems to be pretty accurate.

My partner headed into the backcountry yesterday -right into the heart of the 8 inch forecast. His update said “moist but manageable.”

I’m heading in today -long hike that’s going to be a soaker. I added extra contractor bags -gonna wrap up my rifle with one. I also added a wood stove which I haven’t brought the last couple of years, extra fire starter and bringing my Kindle since I’m expecting lots of tent time the next few days.

We always plan on being out 8-10 days for 1st rifle, but with the opener on Wednesday this year, I took this whole week off and with Monday off, might as well head in on Saturday.
I wasn’t referring to getting wet or being uncomfortable.
Maybe it’s totally different down there but when we got 3-4” in 2013 northern front range, towns were swept away and nearly every canyon road was destroyed.

We will be driving in north of Durango Tuesday…. definitely keeping and eye on things.

In Pagosa where I’m at the San Juan hit 2500cfs!!!! Trails in the high country are gonna be a mess. Probably some serious wash outs at creek crossings.

If you are taking 550 north to Silverton, check with the Highway Patrol. That road gets lots of rockslides that close it whenever we have a storm.
